What is a call to action on a website?
A call to action, or CTA, is the button, link or short section on a web page that asks the visitor to take a specific next step, such as Request a quote, Book a table or Join the waitlist. It turns interest into action, and each page should have one main call to action that is easy to see and says exactly what happens next.
Without a call to action, a good page simply ends, and visitors leave. With one that is clear and well placed, the page has a job and a way to measure it.

What a call to action includes
A verb that names the action, what the visitor gets, and sometimes a line that removes doubt: Request a free quote, reply within two days. On a page it usually appears as a button in the first screen, again after the main content, and as a closing section at the end.
One main action per page
A page with Call us, Email us, Book online, Download the brochure and Follow us all at equal weight gives visitors five decisions and often none gets made. Choose the primary action, make it the prominent button, and make the others quieter links.
Wording that works
Name the outcome, not the mechanism: Get my quote rather than Submit; See the menu rather than Click here. Match the promise of the page and the link that brought the visitor. Short, specific and first person phrasing usually outperforms vague labels such as Learn more.
Common mistakes
Hiding the action at the bottom of a long page, using the same button text for different actions, buttons that look like plain text, and a call to action that leads to a form asking for far more than the visitor expected.
Where it shows up in OneCraft
The generator always ends a page with a contact or call to action section, and heroes carry a main button. The call to action section has four layouts: a bold full width ask, a quieter card, an ask beside a photo, and one line with one button pinned to the bottom of phone screens. Button text and targets are edited in the section panel.
Questions people ask
How many calls to action should a page have?
One primary action, repeated where it makes sense: in the first screen, after the main content and at the end. Secondary actions, such as following on social media, can appear as quieter links. Several competing primary buttons dilute attention and usually reduce how many people act.
What makes a good call to action button?
Clear, specific text that names what happens, a colour that stands out from the rest of the page, enough size and space to tap easily on a phone, and a destination that delivers exactly what the button promised. Test it by asking whether a stranger knows what the click does.
Where should a call to action go?
In the first screen for visitors who arrive ready to act, after you have explained the offer for those who need convincing, and at the end of the page. On phones, a button pinned to the bottom of the screen keeps the action one tap away.
Is a phone number a call to action?
It can be, especially for trades and emergency services where people prefer to call. Make the number a tap to call link and label it, such as Call now for a 24 hour plumber. Many sites offer the phone as a second option beside a quote form.
How do I know if my call to action works?
Count the actions it leads to, such as messages, bookings or orders, against visits to the page over a few weeks. Change one thing at a time, the wording, placement or offer, and compare. Small sites need patience, because numbers are low.
