What is noindex?
Noindex is an instruction, usually a robots meta tag in a page head or an HTTP header, that tells search engines not to include that page in their results. The page stays online and anyone with the link can open it; it simply does not appear in search. Search engines must be able to crawl the page to see the instruction.
Noindex is how you keep a page reachable but unlisted: a thank you page, a draft, a page only for existing clients. It is a request that major search engines respect, not a lock.

How it works
A page carries a tag such as meta name robots content noindex. When a search engine crawls the page and sees it, it drops the page from its results or never adds it. Pages already listed disappear after the next crawl. The rest of the site is unaffected unless it carries the tag too.
Noindex versus robots.txt
Robots.txt tells crawlers which addresses not to fetch; noindex tells them not to list a page they fetched. They do different jobs, and combining them badly backfires: if robots.txt blocks a page, crawlers never see its noindex tag, and the page can still appear in results as a bare link if other sites link to it.
When to use it
Thank you and confirmation pages, internal search results, draft sections, client only pages, duplicate print versions and a whole site that is still being built. It keeps thin or private pages out of results without taking them offline or breaking links you have sent people.
Common mistakes
Leaving noindex on after launch, the most common reason a new site never shows in Google. Using noindex for private information, which stays reachable to anyone with the link. And noindexing a page while also blocking it in robots.txt, so search engines never see the tag.
Where it shows up in OneCraft
The Search and sharing card has Hide from search engines, which adds noindex to every page and empties the sitemap while the site stays online. Each page also has its own Hide from search engines switch in the builder Page tab. The robots.txt of a published site blocks only the thank you page, and the store thank you and offline pages are marked noindex.
Questions people ask
Does noindex make a page private?
No. Anyone with the address can still open the page, and it can be shared, bookmarked or found in browser history. Noindex only asks search engines not to list it. For real privacy, use a password or login system, or do not publish the information.
How long does noindex take to remove a page from Google?
The page drops out after Google next crawls it and sees the tag, which can take days to weeks depending on how often the site is crawled. For urgent removals, Search Console has a removal tool that hides a result quickly while noindex makes it permanent.
Will noindex on one page hurt the rest of my site?
No. Noindex applies only to the page carrying it. The rest of the site is crawled and ranked normally. The risk is accidentally applying it site wide, for example by leaving a whole site hidden from search engines after launch.
Should I noindex my thank you page?
Yes, it is a common and sensible use. A thank you page has no value in search results, and someone landing on it from a search would be confused or might skew your form statistics. It stays reachable for visitors who just submitted a form.
What is the difference between noindex and nofollow?
Noindex asks search engines not to list the page. Nofollow asks them not to follow or credit the links on it, or, on a single link, not to pass credit through that link. They can be used together but solve different problems.
