What is a bundle ID?

A bundle ID is the unique identifier of an app, written in reverse domain style such as com.kilnandtide.app. Apple calls it the bundle identifier and Android calls the equivalent the application ID or package name. Stores use it to tell apps apart, and once an app is published under a bundle ID it cannot be changed without creating a new app.

Users never see a bundle ID, but every part of publishing depends on it: signing, the store listing, push notifications and links that open the app.

The format

Reverse domain notation: start with a domain you control, reversed, then the app name, separated by dots, such as au.com.kilnandtide.shop or com.kilnandtide.app. Use letters and digits, start each part with a letter, and keep it lower case. iOS and Android accept slightly different characters, so the common subset is safest.

Why it must be unique and permanent

Stores use the identifier as the app true identity. Updates must use the same one, or the store treats them as a different app with no reviews or users. Once published, changing it means publishing a new app and asking users to install it again.

Where else it is used

Signing certificates and provisioning profiles on Apple, push notification setup, universal links and Android app links that let your website open the app, and analytics or crash reporting tools that group data by app. Choosing it carefully once avoids rework across all of them.

Common mistakes

Using a builder default and later wanting your own brand in it, including a domain you do not own, mixing case or hyphens that one platform rejects, and creating separate identifiers for iOS and Android that make links and support harder.

Where it shows up in OneCraft

The Mobile app settings for a store or menu site default the bundle ID to site.onecraft followed by your site name, and you can set your own; the screen notes it cannot change once the app is in a store. In Code mode the app phone panel sets the app name and bundle ID. With an Apple Team ID or Android fingerprint set, the next publish adds the files that let links open the app.

Questions people ask

Can I change my bundle ID after publishing?

No. The stores identify the app by its bundle ID, so a different ID is a different app. You would publish a new app, lose existing reviews and ask users to install the new one. Decide on the identifier before your first release.

Is the bundle ID the same as the app name?

No. The app name is what users see under the icon and in the store, and you can change it later. The bundle ID is a hidden technical identifier that stays fixed. They can resemble each other, but they serve different purposes.

Do iOS and Android use the same identifier?

They are separate settings, Apple bundle identifier and Android application ID, but using the same value on both is common and simplifies links, notifications and support. Choose a format both platforms accept: letters and digits in dot separated parts, each starting with a letter.

Do I need to own the domain in my bundle ID?

It is convention rather than a hard rule, but using a domain you own avoids clashes and confusion. A builder default with its own domain works too; just decide before release, because you cannot switch to your own domain later.

What is a Team ID?

On Apple, a Team ID is a ten character identifier of your developer account. It is combined with the bundle ID in signing and in the apple-app-site-association file that lets your website open your app, so builders sometimes ask for it.
