Product recall, Pipwood Toys Trundle Truck, batch 2608

Product recall notice template for one batch of a toy

A product recall notice has to let a parent or customer identify the exact product in seconds, understand the hazard, know what to do right now, and know what they will get back. This one page notice from a toy maker recalling 1,860 wooden trucks from batch 2608 does that, and tells them where the batch number is printed.

The hazard
The rear axle in this batch can work loose, so a wheel and its cap can come off. The cap is a small part that a child under three could swallow or choke on. We have had three reports of a wheel coming off and no reports of injury.
2
What you should do
Stop using the truck now and put it out of reach of children. Check the batch number under the truck. Trucks from any other batch are not affected and can be kept.
3
The remedy
Return the truck for a full refund of $39.95 or a free replacement from a new batch, whichever you prefer. You do not need a receipt. Take it back to the store where you bought it, or ask us for a free reply paid satchel.

How to adapt this document

First, for food, swap the table rows for the product name, pack size, best before dates and batch code, and add the allergen or contaminant, since food recalls run through the food standards body rather than the consumer product process. Second, for an electrical product, add the model number from the rating plate and a clear instruction to unplug it, and say whether the remedy is a repair visit. Third, for a recall sold only online, replace the store return option with a prepaid courier pickup booked from the customer's order number.

Which law the terms follow

The recall is made under the Australian Consumer Law, in Schedule 2 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. Section 128 requires a supplier who voluntarily recalls consumer goods to notify the Commonwealth Minister within two days, and the ACCC administers this through Product Safety Australia. State fair trading agencies, such as NSW Fair Trading, can also act on unsafe goods. Toys for young children are subject to a mandatory safety standard on small parts, which is the hazard this notice addresses.

What makes this document work

Identification comes before explanation

The banner names the product and batch, and the first table gives the product code PW-TT-01, batch 2608 printed under the truck next to the barcode, the sale period of 3 August to 30 September, and 1,860 units. A parent can turn the toy over and know in seconds whether to read on.

The hazard is specific and honest

Section 1 says how it fails, a loose rear axle letting a wheel and cap come off, who is at risk, children under three, and what has happened so far, three reports of a wheel coming off and no injuries. Vague wording such as a potential safety issue makes people ignore recalls.

The remedy removes every excuse

A full refund of $39.95 or a replacement, no receipt needed, returned to any store or by a free reply paid satchel. Each condition a recall adds, like proof of purchase or postage paid by the customer, lowers the return rate and leaves more unsafe toys in homes.

Questions people ask

Does a voluntary recall have to be reported in Australia?

Yes. Under the Australian Consumer Law, a supplier that voluntarily recalls consumer goods because they may cause injury must notify the Commonwealth Minister within two days of taking that action. Notification is made through the Product Safety Australia website, which the ACCC runs, and this notice says when it was done.

What should a recall notice include?

A clear product description and photo or code, how to identify affected units, the hazard, what consumers should do, the remedy, and contacts. This notice gives the batch location and sale period so customers can check, and a phone line open every day, because parents read recalls in the evening and at weekends.

Where should a recall notice be published?

Everywhere the product was sold and promoted: on the product page and website banner, at the 41 stores that stocked it, emailed to online buyers, and on social media. Retailers usually display the notice at the counter. The regulator also lists recalls on its own website, which many parents check.

Can I offer a voucher instead of a refund?

Offering only store credit discourages returns, so most recalls offer a refund, a repair or a replacement at the customer's choice, as this one does. A voucher can be offered as an extra option. Whatever the remedy, make it free, with no receipt and no postage cost for the customer.

What if a death or serious injury is linked to the product?

That triggers a separate mandatory report to the ACCC within two days of the supplier becoming aware of it, whether or not a recall has started. It is different from the recall notification. In this example there have been no injuries, so only the voluntary recall notification applied.
