Selvane Series A

Beauty brand pitch deck example for a skincare line

A beauty investor has seen a hundred serums in a nice bottle and is looking for the one thing that is expensive to copy. Selvane is invented, and its ten slides put a registered clinical trial at the centre and cost it at 90 cents a bottle so the claim can be checked.

A crowded shelf

Skincare is the easiest category to launch in and the hardest to stay in. Anyone can put a white label serum in a nice bottle. Almost nobody pays for the trial that lets them say what it does, and that is the whole gap.

What holds people back

Claims cost money

A 12 week trial on 120 people costs about 180,000 dollars. Most brands skip it and write copy that means nothing, which is why nobody believes any of it.

Ranges get too wide

A brand with 24 products has 24 stock problems and one customer. Five products, one of which does the work, is a business a pharmacy buyer can plan around.

Nobody comes back

Most skincare is bought once, tried and abandoned. Subscription is the only structure that turns a serum into a habit and a habit into a forecast.

Pharmacy asks for proof

A pharmacy assistant is asked what a product does and has to answer. Without a trial behind the claim there is nothing for them to say.

What is in the range

Five products, one active, six things a buyer can check

One active

A 0.5 percent encapsulated retinaldehyde. Every product in the range either carries it or supports the skin that is on it.

One trial

One hundred and twenty participants, twelve weeks, dermatologist graded, with the protocol published before the results.

One bottle

The same airless pump across four of the five products, so the packaging order is one order and the refill is one part.

One maker

Formulated and filled at a single licensed facility in Auckland, which is also what keeps the claim file in one place.

Eight weeks

The median time a subscriber takes to finish a 30 millilitre serum, which is why the plan ships every eight weeks and not monthly.

Fifty two thousand

Customers since launch, of whom 4,800 hold an active plan. Those plans carry the 44 percent of revenue on the cover.

Revenue by product

Year to June 2027. The serum is the business and the other four keep people on it.

What the split says

Six things the product mix shows:

Serum is 62 percent, 2.54 million dollars, and 71 percent of it is on plan

Moisturiser is 16 percent and is almost always bought with the serum

Cleanser is 10 percent, the cheapest way into the range at 0.41 million

Eye cream and the starter kit make up 12 percent between them

Four of the five products share one airless pump and one refill part

A second tested claim on the moisturiser turns one listing into a range

Sixty eight dollars, taken apart

One 30 millilitre serum. Every line is a real invoice, not an allocation.

Why the formula cost is not the point

The ingredients in a serum cost a few dollars, and every brand in the category knows it. What separates two bottles at the same price is whether anybody paid to find out if the thing works. The clinical line below is 90 cents a bottle because the trial is amortised over three years of expected volume. It is the smallest line on the sheet and the only one a pharmacy buyer asks about, which is exactly why most brands do not carry it at all.

How the claim was tested

Twelve weeks, 120 participants, 184,000 dollars. The protocol was registered before anybody was recruited.

Protocol

Written first

The measure, the timepoints and the statistics were fixed and registered before recruitment, so the result could not be chosen afterwards.

Recruit

120 participants

Six skin tones, ages 28 to 61, half on the serum and half on the same base with no active, neither group told which.

Measure

Weeks 0, 6 and 12

Standardised photography plus dermatologist grading of fine lines and evenness, by two graders who never met the participants.

Analyse

One primary result

Fine line grade improved in 71 percent of the serum group against 24 percent on the base. One number, reported whichever way it fell.

Say it

On the pack

The claim on the carton is the primary result in plain words, with the sample size beside it. Nothing else from the study is used in copy.

The ask

Pharmacy is the only channel where a tested claim is worth more than a photograph. That is the whole round.

$5M

Series A, to 900 pharmacy doors and 12 million dollars of revenue

$2.25M

Pharmacy distribution

Forty five percent. A wholesaler listing, shelf position in 900 doors and the assistant training that makes the claim usable.

$1.50M

Inventory and capital

Thirty percent. Wholesalers pay at 60 days and a listing needs four months of cover on the shelf before the first invoice clears.

$1.25M

The second trial

Twenty five percent. A trial on the moisturiser, because a second tested claim is what turns one listing into a range listing.

Slide by slide

Slide one puts the subscription share on the cover. Slide two argues that claims, not formulas, are the barrier in skincare. Slide three is six checkable facts about the range. Slide four is an eight tile number wall ending on pharmacy doors at zero. Slide five is revenue by product as a donut beside six readings of the mix. Slide six takes the 68 dollar serum apart line by line with a callout on the clinical cost. Slide seven is the trial in five steps, starting with the registered protocol. Slide eight prices one off against the eight week plan. Slide nine splits five million across distribution, inventory and a second trial. Slide ten offers the study rather than the pitch.

How to adapt this deck

A colour cosmetics brand replaces the clinical slide with a shade range and repeat purchase slide, because the buying decision is match and habit rather than efficacy. A brand already in pharmacy swaps the cost sheet for sell through per door, since the listing is won and the question becomes whether it holds. A company licensing its formula rather than selling a finished product moves the trial to second and prices per litre instead of per bottle, because the customer is a manufacturer and the claim is the only thing being sold.

What this audience asks for

Australia regulates cosmetic ingredients through its industrial chemicals scheme, which publishes what has to be assessed before an ingredient can be introduced, and the therapeutic goods regulator takes over the moment a product claims to treat something. The line between those two bodies is the line this deck is written along, and it is why the claim slide reports a graded cosmetic outcome rather than a medical one. An investor who has been through a compliance problem in beauty will look for that distinction before they look at the revenue.

What makes this deck work

The claim slide is a method, not a result

Slide seven runs the trial in five steps and the first one is that the protocol was registered before recruitment, so the result could not be chosen afterwards. Every competitor can buy a study. Very few can show the order in which they did it, which is what the slide is really for.

The cost sheet answers the question it raises

Slide six lists 9.40 dollars of formula inside a 68 dollar serum, which is the number a sceptic would have found anyway, and the callout beside it explains that the 90 cent clinical line is the one the pharmacy buyer asks about. Naming your own weakest looking line first removes it as an argument.

Pharmacy doors is reported as zero

Slide four ends its eight number wall with pharmacy doors at zero and the description, the thing this round changes. A metrics slide that reports the number the round exists to move, at its current value, is more persuasive than one that only shows the numbers that already look good.

Questions people ask

What goes in a beauty brand pitch deck?

Why the category is hard to hold, what is actually in the range, customers and subscription share, revenue by product, the cost sheet, the evidence behind the claim, pricing and the ask. This example uses ten slides and spends two of them on the claim.

How do I present a clinical claim in a deck?

As a method with a sample size and a registration order, not as a result in large type. This deck reports 120 participants, twelve weeks, dermatologist graded, protocol registered first, and puts the primary result in one line rather than spreading it over the slide.

Should a skincare deck show the cost of goods?

Yes. Every investor in the category already assumes the formula is a few dollars. Showing 9.40 dollars inside a 68 dollar price, with filling, packaging, the amortised clinical cost and fulfilment beside it, converts a suspicion into an ordinary margin conversation you can have in the room.

How do I show subscription share?

As a percentage of revenue with the median subscriber life beside it. This deck shows 44 percent and a 14 month median, and explains that the plan ships every eight weeks because that is how long a 30 millilitre bottle lasts. A share with no duration is half a number.

How many slides for a beauty raise?

Ten to twelve. This one is ten. The pressure in this category is to add brand and imagery slides. A range described as six checkable facts and a donut of revenue by product does more work in a first meeting than any amount of art direction.

Why does pharmacy distribution need its own round?

Because the working capital comes before the revenue. This deck puts 30 percent of the ask into inventory and states that wholesalers pay at 60 days while a listing needs four months of cover on the shelf. The claim is what wins the listing and the cash is what holds it.
