Training plan 2027, Wexmoor Distribution

Training plan template with needs table, calendar and cost

A training plan has to show who needs which training and why, who will deliver it, when, what it costs and how anyone will know it changed the work. This five page plan for a 46 person warehouse links a needs analysis to eight courses, a calendar built around peak season, an $18,000 cost table and an evaluation that ends at a measurable result.

1. Purpose

Wexmoor Distribution stores and ships homewares for 14 retail clients from one 18,000 square metre warehouse, with 46 staff across two shifts. In 2026 we had 7 forklift incidents, a pick error rate of 0.42% and two team leader vacancies filled from outside because nobody inside was ready. This plan is built to change those three numbers in 2027.

2. Needs analysis

Needs were found from four sources: licence and certificate expiry dates in the training register, the 2026 incident and near miss log, pick accuracy by picker, and a skills check each team leader completed with their staff in November 2026.

Inductions for new starters are not in this plan; they run under the induction procedure. Forty hours of on the job coaching by team leaders for the three team leader participants bring the year's total to 612 hours.

6. Evaluation

Each course is judged at four points: did people rate it, did they pass, do they work differently, and did the number it was meant to move actually move.

How to adapt this document

First, run your own needs analysis from records you already keep, such as licences, incidents and error rates, and let it decide the courses. Second, if your business is an office, replace forklift and dangerous goods training with system, compliance and management training, but keep the evidence column. Third, choose one result measure per course before booking it, so the year end review compares something real rather than attendance.

What makes this document work

Every course traces to evidence

The needs table names the source for each gap: 5 of 7 forklift incidents at the dock, a pick error rate of 0.42%, two team leader roles filled from outside, a 1.1% stock variance and two dangerous goods consignments refused by carriers. No course appears without a problem it is meant to fix.

The numbers reconcile

Course hours add to 572, and 40 hours of coaching bring the year to 612. Nine cost lines, from four new forklift licences at $650 to the team leader program at $1,450 each, add to exactly $18,000, with wages for training time stated as outside that budget.

Evaluation ends at a result

Each course is checked four ways: rated, passed, used on the job and a result by year end. Forklift training is judged by incidents falling from 7 to 3 or fewer, the team leader program by the next vacancy being filled from inside.

Questions people ask

What is a training needs analysis?

A training needs analysis compares the skills a role needs with the skills people have, using evidence such as licence expiry dates, incident logs, error rates and manager skills checks. It produces a list of gaps by role and person, which the training plan then answers. Without it, training budgets drift to whatever courses are offered.

How should a training budget be set?

Cost each course from quotes or per person prices, add an allowance for materials and records, and state whether wages for time in training are inside or outside the budget, because that changes the total a lot. Booking a quarter ahead fixes prices. This plan prices eight courses at $16,710 plus a $1,290 allowance.

When is the best time to schedule staff training?

Outside your busiest periods, and in an order that respects dependencies, such as new licences before the shift that needs them. A warehouse avoids the peak months before the holidays; a retailer might avoid sale seasons. Spread refreshers across the year in groups so operations never lose a whole team at once.

How do you evaluate whether training worked?

Check at four levels: did people find it useful, did they learn and pass, do they work differently afterwards, and did the business result move. The last two matter most and need a check on the job and a measure chosen before training starts, such as incidents or error rates, reviewed at the end of the year.

Who should own a staff training plan?

One manager who answers for the results, usually operations or HR in a small business, with team leaders responsible for the on the job checks. Owning the plan means booking courses on time, keeping the training register current and reporting progress each quarter. Without a named owner, refreshers lapse quietly until a licence expires or an incident exposes the gap.

Should inductions be part of an annual training plan?

Usually they sit in a separate induction procedure, because they run whenever someone starts rather than on a yearly calendar. The training plan covers development and refresher training for existing staff. Keeping them apart stops the plan filling with routine items and makes its budget and results easier to read.
