Christmas sale flyer

A toy shop at Christmas is not really selling a discount. It is answering two questions at the counter forty times a day: what suits a four year old, and what can I get for fifty dollars. Pennywhistle Toys answers the first on one flyer and the second on another, then puts the lay-by dates and the age warnings on a third so nobody has to ask.

The 3 designs

The same business laid out three ways, on three templates and three colour themes. Every price, name and time on these was written for this example, so you can judge the layouts on real content rather than placeholder text.

LAY-BY IS OPEN
TWENTY PER CENT DOWN.
HOW LAY-BY WORKS
Twenty per cent down, fortnightly payments after that, and the last one due Friday 11 December.
WHAT YOU SIGN
A written agreement with every term on it, including the fee if you cancel. Your copy goes home with you.
WRAPPING AND CARDS
Free wrapping on anything over $30, and a gift receipt with no price on it if you ask at the counter.
AGE WARNINGS
Every box on the under three shelf is checked before it goes out.
Anything with a small part carries the warning that it is not suitable for children under three, and it is shelved away from the toddler aisle so it cannot be picked up by mistake.
The last lay-by payment is due 11 December, not Christmas Eve.

What makes these work

One flyer sorts by age, the other by money

A grandparent knows the child but not the toys. A parent knows the budget but not what is new. Splitting those into two designs means neither flyer has to carry a grid with age down one axis and price across the other, which is the layout that makes people put a flyer down.

The price bands name actual toys, not categories

Wooden yo-yo $14, marble run starter $45, beginner telescope $89. Fifteen named items across three columns, because a column headed under $50 with no items in it is a promise the shop has not kept yet.

The third sheet is the one nobody else prints

Deposit, payment rhythm, final payment date, what the written agreement contains, and where the small part warnings sit. It is the least glamorous of the three and the one that gets pinned behind the counter and pointed at.

Questions people ask

What has to be in a lay-by offer advertised on a flyer?

A lay-by agreement has to be in writing, and the customer has to be given a copy setting out the terms including any termination charge. That charge cannot be more than the business reasonable costs. A customer can cancel any time before they take the goods, and the business can only cancel for a breach, for ceasing to trade, or where the product stops being available.

When should the final lay-by payment fall?

Well before the last posting dates, not on Christmas Eve. The flyer here sets it at Friday 11 December, which leaves a week to post and a week for the shop to chase anybody who has forgotten. Printing the exact date is the whole point of the line.

Does a toy flyer need an age warning on it?

The Australian mandatory standard for toys for children up to 36 months governs design and testing rather than the words on a flyer, so no exact sentence is prescribed here. The convention the standards behind it implement is an age statement plus the hazard, such as not suitable for children under 3 years, small parts. Printing it on the flyer as well as the box costs nothing and settles the question early.

What about the receipt when the gift is for someone else?

A business has to give a proof of transaction for anything over $75, and on request within seven days below that. A gift receipt is a shop convention rather than a legal category: it proves the purchase without printing the price, which is why it is worth naming on the flyer rather than leaving people to ask.
