Summer sale flyer
Tallow Bay Surf Supply runs one three week sale before Christmas and has to say so without inventing a discount. The first flyer is a poster with two photographs and a single number. The second lists three products with the price each one actually sold at through October and November. The third does something almost nobody does on a sale flyer and explains what a was price and an up to figure are allowed to mean.
The 3 designs
The same business laid out three ways, on three templates and three colour themes. Every price, name and time on these was written for this example, so you can judge the layouts on real content rather than placeholder text.

What makes these work
The poster carries one number and two objects
A rack of soft tops and a crate of wax, then up to 40% off and a closing date. Read from a footpath at walking pace that is the entire message, and adding a fourth category would cost the poster its only advantage over the catalogue sitting next to it in the window.
The catalogue puts the old price where it can be checked
Each of the three products carries the price it sold at from 1 October, not a recommended price nobody charged. One of the customer quotes on the sheet is a person saying they compared it against their own receipt from winter, which is exactly the behaviour a genuine was price invites and a fake one cannot survive.
The third flyer explains the claim instead of shouting it
Two stacked cards, one on was pricing and one on the words up to. It is the least decorated of the three and the most useful, because a shopper who understands why a number is trustworthy stops treating every sale ticket as noise.
Questions people ask
When is a was price misleading?
When the item was not sold at that price for a reasonable period immediately before the sale started, or when only a very small proportion of stock ever sold at it. The same test applies to a comparison against a recommended retail price. A crossed out figure that the shop never actually charged is misleading conduct even if the new price is genuinely good.
How much stock has to be at the top of an up to 40% claim?
No law fixes a percentage, which is why the flyer explains the claim rather than quoting a rule. The test is the overall impression. If one token line reaches forty per cent and everything else is cut by five, the poster has misled the reader even though the sentence is literally true. Naming which racks carry the top discount is the honest fix.
Can a sale be extended?
It can, but a price offered at a sale level for an extended period may stop being a sale price at all, because it has effectively become the normal selling price. That is the reason these flyers name a closing date and the price explainer says the tickets come off on 21 December rather than promising to run the offer until stock clears.

Clearance sale flyer
A clearance is not a sale with a bigger number on it. Sprocket & Pine has 31 bikes left from the 2025 range, most of them one or two per size, and nothing is being reordered. These three flyers all say that, but each one answers a different question: what is left, what each model now costs, and which bikes suit which rider.
Sale flyer
Wick & Loom is a linen and homewares shop with one ten day sale to advertise, and here it is as three separate flyers. Same dates, same stock, three ways of putting it: one that opens with a photograph of a made bed, one that lays four products out with the old price beside the new one, and one plain sheet that hands the customer the conditions in readable type.
Gift card promo flyer
Quillon & Co. sells gift cards from $20 to $500 and has decided the most persuasive thing about them is the law. A card sold in Australia has to last at least three years and cannot be eaten by fees, so all three flyers put that where the discount usually goes: one as a headline over a photograph, one as an editorial page about three ways to give, and one as a numbered rules sheet with the statistics on top.
