16:9 vs 4:3 slides: which aspect ratio to use
A 16:9 slide is widescreen: sixteen units across for every nine down, the shape of almost every current laptop, television and projector. A 4:3 slide is the older, squarer standard from the era of tube monitors. Use 16:9 unless you know the room has a 4:3 projector or the slides will mostly be printed.
The decision belongs to the screen the audience will look at, not to taste. Choose wrong and you get black bars down both sides, or a slide shrunk into a letterbox on a wall that could have held twice as much.

Where the two shapes come from
Four by three was the shape of standard definition television and of the computer monitors that presentation software grew up on, so it was the default slide for decades. Sixteen by nine arrived with high definition television, whose production standard fixes a 1920 by 1080 picture, and laptops, projectors and conference room screens followed it. Slide software followed the hardware: PowerPoint now opens every new deck at 16:9 widescreen, and offers 4:3 as Standard in its Slide Size menu. The ratio is only a proportion, so a 1280 by 720 slide and a 3840 by 2160 slide are the same shape at different sharpness.
Where 4:3 still earns a place
Three situations justify the squarer slide. The first is a venue whose projector is genuinely 4:3, which still happens in older lecture theatres and council chambers; a widescreen deck there is shown smaller, with dark bands above and below. The second is a deck that will mostly be printed, because a 4:3 slide sits closer to the shape of a letter page and wastes less paper. The third is a deck that has to match an existing library of 4:3 material. Outside those cases, 16:9 gives you more usable width for a chart, a comparison or two images side by side.
What happens when you switch halfway
Changing the ratio after the slides exist is where the damage happens. PowerPoint scales what it can and, when it cannot, asks whether to Maximize, which keeps content large and lets it run off the edge, or Ensure Fit, which shrinks it so everything stays visible. Keynote warns that existing content might be moved to fit the new shape. Either way, text boxes land in new places, images get cropped or squeezed, and every slide needs checking. Charts suffer most, because their labels shrink with everything else while the reader's distance from the screen stays the same. The cheap fix is to confirm the screen before you build, not after, and to treat the ratio as the first setting of a deck rather than a finishing touch.
How to check the room before choosing
Ask the venue for the native resolution of the projector or screen rather than whether it is widescreen, since people describe screens loosely. 1920 by 1080 or 1280 by 720 means 16:9; 1024 by 768 or 1400 by 1050 means 4:3; 1920 by 1200 is 16:10, a third shape that shows a 16:9 slide with thin bars. If the talk is also streamed or recorded, widescreen wins almost regardless, because the recording and the viewers' screens will be wide even when the hall is not.
Common mistakes with slide shape
The most common is designing on a laptop at 16:9, arriving at a 4:3 room and discovering at the rehearsal that every chart label is now too small to read from the back. The second is a template library that mixes both shapes, so one slide pasted from last year's deck arrives squeezed or floating in empty space. The third is choosing 4:3 out of habit for a deck that will only ever be shared as a link or a PDF on screens that are all wide, which throws away a third of the usable width for no gain. The fourth is fixing a mismatch with a stretch, which distorts photographs and logos in a way the audience notices immediately even when they cannot say why.
Where it shows up in the product
The presentation canvas here is 1920 by 1080, which is 16:9 only. There is no 4:3 canvas, and no portrait or square slide either, so every one of the 369 slide templates is designed for widescreen. The plain PowerPoint export uses the 13.333 by 7.5 inch widescreen layout, which matches the canvas exactly, and a presentation recorded in present mode is saved at 1920 by 1080, 2560 by 1440 or 3840 by 2160, all the same shape. If the room turns out to be 4:3, present mode still fills the width of the display and leaves bands top and bottom, so larger type and fewer words per slide are the practical defence.
Questions people ask
Can I build a 4:3 deck in the builder?
No. The canvas is fixed at 1920 by 1080, and every template is laid out for that shape. If a client insists on 4:3, export to PowerPoint and change the slide size there. The editable export is the better starting point, because its text boxes and charts can be repositioned after PowerPoint rescales them, while the image export only shrinks each picture.
Will a 16:9 deck look wrong on a 4:3 projector?
It will look smaller rather than wrong. The projector shows the full slide width and fills the leftover height with black bands, so the slide uses roughly three quarters of the wall. Nothing is cut off. The risk is legibility at the back of the room, which is solved by bigger type and fewer items per slide.
What pixel size should a 16:9 slide be?
1920 by 1080 covers most projectors and screens and is the size most slide tools design at. Text and shapes are drawn as vectors, so they stay sharp on a larger 4K screen, while photographs benefit from being supplied at least 1920 pixels wide. 1280 by 720 is the same shape and works for older or smaller displays.
Is 16:10 the same as 16:9?
No. 16:10 is slightly taller, 1920 by 1200 for example, and is common on some laptops. PowerPoint lists it as On-screen Show 16:10 at 10 by 6.25 inches. A 16:9 slide on a 16:10 screen shows thin bands above and below, which most audiences never notice, so building at 16:9 remains the safe choice.
Which ratio prints better?
4:3 fills more of a letter or A4 page, while a 16:9 slide printed full width leaves wide empty bands. If the deck is mainly a printed handout, that matters. If it is mainly projected and occasionally printed, print two or three slides per page instead, which suits the wide shape and keeps text readable.
Does the ratio affect exported PDFs?
Yes, the PDF inherits it. Here each PDF page is the slide captured at its own size, so pages are widescreen rather than letter or A4 shaped. The PDF is built from images of the slides, so its text is not selectable, which matters more for a read deck than for a projected one.
