What is the title safe area in video?

The title safe area is the inner part of a video frame where text and graphics are placed so no screen, player or interface cuts them off. The traditional rule kept titles inside the central 80 percent of the picture and essential action inside 90 percent. Current broadcast guidance for widescreen HD allows narrower margins.

Safe areas began as a fix for old televisions that hid the edges of the picture, and the habit outlived the problem. On today's screens the edges are covered by something else, so the idea still matters even where the old numbers no longer do.

Where the idea came from

Tube televisions deliberately overscanned, pushing the edges of the picture beyond the visible glass so that viewers never saw ragged borders, and each set cropped by a slightly different amount. Producers answered with two nested guides. Apple's Final Cut Pro guide still describes the title safe area as the inner 80 percent of the screen, guaranteed to be visible on all TVs, with a wider action safe zone for anything important that is not text. The European Broadcasting Union's recommendation R 95, first issued in 1999 and last revised in 2017, redefined the zones for widescreen production: all essential action inside an Action Safe Area, and all graphics inside a Graphics Safe Area. SMPTE publishes a matching standard, ST 2046-1.

How the margins are measured

The margins are measured in from each edge, not from the total, so a 5 percent margin removes 5 percent at the top, the bottom and both sides. EBU R 95 sets the action safe margin at 3.5 percent and the graphics safe margin at 5 percent, and gives exact pixel and line counts for each format so there is no rounding argument. On a 1080 line picture that works out to roughly 67 pixels in from each side and 38 lines from the top and bottom for action, and 96 pixels and 54 lines for graphics. Editing apps draw these guides as overlays on the viewer, which is the fastest way to check a title before export rather than discovering a clipped letter afterwards.

When it still matters

Broadcast delivery specifications still require the zones, and some televisions and projectors still crop a little by default. For most online video the risk has moved rather than disappeared. Web players draw play controls, progress bars and settings icons over the lower part of the frame, embedded players can be resized into odd shapes, and a frame reused as a thumbnail gets small corners covered by badges. Vertical platforms are the extreme version, with interface layered over a third of the picture, which Meta expresses as a zone of 14 percent at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent at each side. The principle is identical in every case: whatever must be read belongs inside the part nobody covers.

Common mistakes

The most frequent is treating the safe area as the design area, shrinking the whole composition into the middle and leaving empty borders. Backgrounds, photos and colour should run to the edges; only text, logos and essential detail need to sit inside. The second is placing a logo tight in a corner, exactly where players, badges and overscan all bite. The third is applying the old 80 percent rule everywhere and wasting space that modern screens actually show. The fourth is assuming one rule covers every platform, when a wide video on a watch page and a tall one in a feed have very different hidden strips. The last is checking only in the editor at thumbnail size, never full screen on a real device.

Where it shows up in the product

Two things are drawn over every scene here, and both sit low. The caption pill is centred at the bottom with a bottom inset of 44 pixels in landscape and 120 pixels in vertical, and it never grows wider than 72 percent of the frame. In a 1080 pixel tall landscape frame, 44 pixels is about 4 percent of the height, clear of the EBU action margin but just inside its graphics margin, which only matters for broadcast delivery. The watermark sits bottom left at 72 percent opacity, fading in after the opener and out before the closer. Landscape at 1920 by 1080 and vertical at 1080 by 1920 are the two formats offered, so those are the two sets of insets that apply, and the separate page on vertical safe zones covers what phone apps hide.

Questions people ask

Do modern televisions still crop the picture?

Far less than tube sets did, but it has not vanished. Many televisions offer a picture setting, often called just scan, screen fit or similar, and some ship with a small overscan switched on. Because you cannot control the viewer's settings, keeping text inside a modest margin remains cheap insurance for anything that might be played on a television.

Are safe areas different for 4K?

The percentages are the same, and the pixel counts scale with the frame. EBU R 95 gives figures for 2160 and 4320 line production alongside HD, so a 5 percent graphics margin on a 3840 by 2160 picture is about 192 pixels at each side and 108 lines at the top and bottom, exactly double the HD numbers.

What is a caption safe area?

It is a narrower zone that keeps subtitles or captions readable if a widescreen picture is later cut down to an older, squarer shape. EBU R 95 marks a 4:3 caption safe area inside the 16:9 frame for exactly that reason. For online video that is only ever shown widescreen or vertical, the normal graphics margin is usually enough.

Where should a logo go in a video?

Inside the graphics safe margin, in a corner that the player and the platform leave clear, and small enough that it does not compete with the content. Top corners avoid most player controls on wide video. On vertical video, the top corners collide with account names and the bottom with captions, so a logo is often best left for the opening and closing scenes.

Does YouTube publish a safe area for landscape video?

Not as a set of margins for ordinary uploads. The practical constraints come from the player itself, which shows controls and a progress bar along the bottom, and from end screen elements placed over the final seconds. Keeping text out of the lowest part of the frame and previewing on both a computer and a phone covers most cases.
