EU VAT calculator for all 27 member states
Every EU country sets its own VAT rates inside the VAT Directive's limits: a standard rate of at least 15%, from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, plus up to two reduced rates. Pick the member state and rate and this calculator adds VAT or takes it out, and flags when a cross border business sale is reverse charged instead.

The 27 standard rates
On the date checked the standard rates were: Austria 20, Belgium 21, Bulgaria 20, Croatia 25, Cyprus 19, Czechia 21, Denmark 25, Estonia 24, Finland 25.5, France 20, Germany 19, Greece 24, Hungary 27, Ireland 23, Italy 22, Latvia 21, Lithuania 21, Luxembourg 17, Malta 18, the Netherlands 21, Poland 23, Portugal 23, Romania 21, Slovakia 23, Slovenia 22, Spain 21 and Sweden 25 per cent. Several moved in 2024 and 2025: Finland to 25.5, Estonia to 24, Slovakia to 23 and Romania to 21. Rates change with national budgets, so the date sits under the calculator.
Reduced rates and what they cover
The Directive lets a country apply up to two reduced rates of at least 5% to the goods and services listed in its Annex III, such as food, water, medicines, books, passenger transport and hotel accommodation, plus in some cases a super reduced rate below 5% and a zero rate for basic needs. Which items take which rate is decided nationally, so books can be 5.5% in France and 7% in Germany. The selector offers each state's reduced rates as the Commission lists them; the item list behind each rate is in the Taxes in Europe database.
Business to business reverse charge
When a VAT registered business sells most services, or goods dispatched between member states, to a VAT registered business in another member state, the seller usually charges no VAT. The buyer accounts for the VAT in its own country instead, which is called the reverse charge. The invoice shows both VAT numbers and a note such as reverse charge, and the seller checks the buyer's number in the Commission's VIES service first. Ticking the box in the calculator sets the VAT to zero and shows that note.
Selling to consumers in another country
A sale to a consumer in another member state is different. Above a single EU wide threshold of 10,000 euro a year in cross border distance sales and digital services, the seller charges the VAT rate of the customer's country, not its own, and can declare it through the One Stop Shop instead of registering in each country. That is the case where choosing the customer's country in the calculator matters most.
Putting EU VAT on a quote
A quote in euro should state the rate used and the country, or the reverse charge wording for a cross border business sale. The proposals module labels the tax line VAT for quotes and invoices in euro and sets the rate per line in its pricing table, so a German buyer's quote can carry 19% while a reverse charged one carries 0% with the wording in the terms.
Limits
- Rates checked on 21 October 2026 against the European Commission's Your Europe table of member state rates. This is arithmetic, not tax advice.
- Super reduced and parking rates for single items, regional rates such as the Canary Islands or the Azores, and zero rates are not in the selector.
- No One Stop Shop return and no distance selling thresholds.
- Amounts are shown in euro; member states outside the euro area invoice in their own currency.
What it does not do
- It does not check a VAT number; use VIES for that.
- It does not cover countries outside the EU.
- It does not store the amount.
Questions people ask
What is the VAT rate in each EU country?
Standard rates run from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary; most countries sit between 20% and 23%. Germany is 19%, France 20%, Italy 22%, Spain 21%, the Netherlands 21% and Ireland 23%. Each country also has reduced rates for listed goods and services.
When does the reverse charge apply?
Mostly when a VAT registered business supplies services, or dispatches goods, to a VAT registered business in another member state. The seller charges no VAT and the buyer self accounts for it at its own country's rate. Sales to consumers, and some services such as those tied to land, follow other rules.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 21%, a gross price of 121 euro is 100 euro net with 21 euro of VAT. At 19%, divide by 1.19. Taking the percentage of the gross price overstates the VAT, because the gross price already includes it.
What is the lowest VAT rate allowed in the EU?
The standard rate must be at least 15%. Reduced rates must be at least 5%, but a member state may also apply one super reduced rate below 5% and a zero rate to a limited list of basic goods, and some states keep older special rates agreed before 1991.
Which country's VAT do I charge on an online sale?
For a business customer in another state, usually none, under the reverse charge. For a consumer, your own country's rate until your cross border sales pass 10,000 euro a year, then the rate of the consumer's country, which you can declare through the One Stop Shop.
Do non euro countries invoice in euro?
Not necessarily. Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden have their own currencies, and VAT is usually reported in the national currency even if the invoice is in euro. The calculator's percentages work the same in any currency; only the symbol differs.
