One week for every 60
The Victorian Government's page explains that long service leave accrues at one week for every 60 weeks of continuous service, about 0.866 of a week for each year. It applies to full time, part time, casual, seasonal and fixed term work. Leave accrues from the first day, so the balance grows steadily; it is the right to take it or be paid it that waits for 7 years. Ten years of service gives about 8.67 weeks, the same as NSW at that point, but Victoria gets there by steady accrual.
The 7 year access point
After at least 7 years of continuous employment with one employer, an employee can take long service leave and is paid any unused entitlement when employment ends, whatever the reason. Before 7 years the leave accrues but cannot be taken, and nothing is paid out on leaving. The government's own example is an employee with 8 years and 6 weeks at a chemist who asks to take leave; the employer multiplies her service by the accrual rate to find what she can take.
Three averages when hours changed
When an employee's hours have changed, the Act pays leave at the greatest of three averages of ordinary hours: over the last 52 weeks, over the last 5 years, and over the whole period of continuous employment. Someone who worked 34 hours a week for years and cut back to 22.8 hours recently is paid on the higher, longer average, not the current hours. The calculator takes the three averages and uses the highest, and the note says which one it was.
A worked example
An employee who started on 3 August 2015 and checks on 30 October 2026 has a little over 11 years of service, about 9.78 weeks of leave. With averages of 22.8 hours over the last 52 weeks, 30.4 hours over 5 years and 34 hours over the whole period, the highest is 34 hours. At $41.20 an hour the leave is worth about 9.78 times 34 times $41.20, around $13,700. The example button fills in these figures.
Writing it into the records
Employers in Victoria must keep long service leave records for each employee, including the start date, leave taken and payments made, and keep them for at least 7 years after employment ends. A leave application or a final pay letter should state the weeks, the hours basis and the rate. The AI document generator writes either from a description that includes the figures from this calculator.
Limits
- Law checked on 21 October 2026 against the Long Service Leave Act 2018 (Vic) and the Victorian Government's long service leave page. This is arithmetic, not legal advice.
- Portable schemes for construction, contract cleaning, community services and security are separate.
- The three averages are the figures you type; working them out from payroll records is the employer's job.
- Some absences count towards continuous employment and some do not; the tool counts all days between the dates.
What it does not do
- It does not track leave already taken.
- It does not cover NSW; the NSW calculator does.
- It does not store the dates or pay.
Questions people ask
When can I take long service leave in Victoria?
Once you have at least 7 years of continuous employment with the same employer. Leave accrues from your first day, but before 7 years it cannot be taken or paid out. After 7 years you can take what has accrued, in periods of at least a day.
How is long service leave paid if my hours changed?
At the greatest of three averages of your ordinary hours: over the last 52 weeks, the last 5 years, or the whole period of continuous employment, times your ordinary rate of pay. That protects employees who reduced their hours late in their career.
Is it paid out when I resign after 7 years?
Yes. After 7 years, any untaken long service leave is paid out when employment ends for any reason, including resignation. Before 7 years, nothing is paid out under the Victorian Act. The payment uses the same three averages as leave taken.
How much leave do I get after 10 years in Victoria?
About 8.67 weeks, which is 520 weeks of service divided by 60. Every further year adds about 0.867 of a week, so 15 years gives 13 weeks. Leave already taken comes off the balance. The calculator works it out from the exact days between the dates.
Do casual employees get long service leave in Victoria?
Yes. The 2018 Act covers casual and seasonal employees with continuous employment with one employer, and some breaks between engagements of up to 12 weeks, or longer if agreed, do not break continuity. The calculator counts all days between the two dates.
Does parental leave count for long service leave?
Under the Victorian Act, up to 52 weeks of unpaid parental leave counts as service, and periods of paid leave count as well. Other unpaid leave generally does not count unless it is agreed, though it does not break continuity.
