Nine of 72 candidate satellite passes were discarded for cloud, thinning the 2020 summer sample in particular.

Classification error

Canopy classification carries 6% error against the field audit, and errs toward missing young street trees.

Daytime only

No night-time thermal data, so the thesis says nothing about overnight heat retention where health impacts concentrate.

Land use change

Two suburbs redeveloped during the study window; both are retained in the model but flagged in every chapter.

Linearity assumed

The model fits one slope across the 9% to 38% range; the true curve may flatten above the observed cover.

How to adapt this deck

A masters defence compresses to eight slides by folding future work into the contribution and cutting the agenda; the limitations slide stays. For a 15 minute slot, one results slide has to carry the strongest chapter and the other two become one line each on the contribution slide. A humanities thesis without charts keeps the identical skeleton and replaces each results chart with the chapter’s central claim and its best piece of evidence as text; the one slide per chapter rule is about argument discipline, not about data. Whichever version you present, rehearse the limitations slide hardest. It is the slide examiners open on, and a candidate who names a weakness before the panel does has already shown the judgement the defence is testing. The contribution slide is the other one worth memorising, because it answers the question every panel asks, which is what is new here.

What makes this deck work

Three chapters, three slides, three statistics

Chapter one is a fitted relationship with its slope and R² printed in the framing line, chapter two is five bars of cooling by tree type, chapter three is a before and after table for the planting programme. One chart per chapter forces the discipline a 30 minute viva demands: the finding, not the workings.

Limitations come before the contribution

Slide nine names cloud gaps, 6% classification error, no night data, land use change in two suburbs and the linearity assumption, one slide before the three contribution claims. Raising the weaknesses first means the examiners hear them in the candidate’s framing rather than discovering them in their own.

The questions slide is a steering wheel

The closing slide offers the slope, the tree types or the programme as starting points, which are the three sub-questions restated. Examiners usually open with whatever is in front of them, so the last slide quietly nominates the ground the candidate knows best.

Questions people ask

How many slides for a thesis defence?

Around one per two to three minutes of talk. This 30 minute defence uses twelve, of which only six carry data. Doctoral candidates routinely bring forty; the discipline of one slide per results chapter is what keeps the talk inside time with room for the discussion that actually decides the outcome.

What order should a defence presentation follow?

Motivation, question, methods, results, limitations, contribution, future work, questions. The order in this example exists so every claim is earned before it is made: the contribution slide can be assertive on slide ten because the evidence sat on slides six to eight and the caveats on nine.

Should I include limitations in my own defence?

Yes, as a dedicated slide, before the contribution. Every examiner has a limitations question prepared; a candidate who presents five honest ones with their consequences converts a cross examination into a discussion. The worst position is having a limitation raised that the talk pretended not to know.

How much of the literature review belongs in the talk?

Three facts, not thirty citations. This deck compresses the literature into the motivation slide: the mortality burden, the canopy range across suburbs and the policy gap. Examiners have read the thesis; the talk exists to show command of the argument, and reciting the review signals the opposite.

How do I handle the questions slide?

Restate your sub-questions as prompts rather than ending on a bare thank you. It fills the silence while the panel organises itself, and it frames the opening exchange on ground you control. This example offers three entry points that map exactly to the three results chapters.
