What is the Ken Burns effect?

The Ken Burns effect is a slow pan and zoom across a still photograph, so the image seems to move as though a camera were filming it. It is named after the American documentary maker Ken Burns, whose films animate archive photographs this way. Editing apps create it by moving a crop frame between a start and an end position.

A photo held perfectly still for several seconds feels like a pause, while the same photo drifting gently feels like part of the story. The effect is simple to apply, and the gap between graceful and queasy lies almost entirely in the settings.

A documentary technique that became a button

Long before editing software, documentary crews filmed photographs on a rostrum stand, moving the camera or the artwork slowly to add life to images that could not be reshot. Ken Burns, whose films for American public television lean heavily on nineteenth and twentieth century photographs, made the slow glide so recognisable that his name became the label. Apple later put that label on a button in iMovie, and plenty of other editing apps describe the same move by the same name. The idea is identical whatever the tool, whether it runs on a phone or a desktop editing suite: a still image is treated as a scene to explore, with the frame moving from one detail to another so the viewer is guided through the picture instead of being shown all of it at once.

How the move is set

Apple's iMovie guide describes the standard method. Select the photo, choose the Ken Burns control, then position and resize a Start frame and an End frame over the image. During playback the picture is cropped to the Start frame and moves smoothly to the End frame, so the camera appears to zoom in or out. Pan comes from placing the two frames in different spots, and zoom from giving them different sizes. On iPhone, iMovie applies the movement to added photos automatically and uses face detection to keep people in view, with a switch to turn it off. The quality of the result depends on how far apart the two frames are, how long the photo stays on screen and how much resolution the photo has.

When it helps a video

Anywhere the material is still but the story needs to keep moving. Historical and family archives are the original use, but the same logic serves a property listing built from photos, an event recap, a product range shot as stills, or a memorial video. It is strongest when the motion follows the narration: drifting towards the window as the voice mentions the view, or settling on a face as a name is spoken. That coordination turns a slideshow into a guided look. It also rescues a photo that is weakly composed, because a tight End frame can crop out clutter and finish on the part of the image that actually matters. The effect is least useful for photos that are already tightly framed on one small subject, where there is nowhere left to travel.

Common mistakes

The biggest is too much movement. W3C accessibility guidance on animation notes that motion can trigger dizziness, headaches and nausea in people with vestibular disorders, and large, fast zooms on a big screen are exactly the kind of movement that causes it. The second is a random move on every photo, so the sequence feels chaotic rather than guided. The third is cropping through a face or a sign at the end of the move. The fourth is using a low resolution image, which softens as it scales. The fifth is mismatched timing, where a long slow drift sits under an upbeat track with quick cuts, and the picture and the music seem to belong to different videos.

Is a Ken Burns slideshow the same as a video?

Technically it is exported as a video file, but viewers judge it differently. A slideshow with a uniform drift on every photo reads as a slideshow however smooth it is. It starts to feel like a video when the photos are ordered as a story, the moves are chosen for each picture, and the narration or music is timed to what appears on screen.

How long should each photo stay on screen?

Long enough for the move to feel calm and for the viewer to find the subject, which for most photos means a few seconds rather than one. Busy photos with several people or some text need longer than a single object on a plain background. If a sequence has many photos, vary the holds slightly so the rhythm does not become mechanical.

What happens with a portrait photo in a landscape video?

The frame is much wider than the picture, so the editor either crops heavily, which leaves room for a vertical pan down the photo, or fits the whole photo with empty space at the sides. A slow pan from top to bottom is the classic answer for tall images such as a full length portrait or a building facade, because it reveals the picture gradually.

Can the Ken Burns effect fix a blurry photo?

No, and it usually makes blur more obvious, because zooming in enlarges the softness along with the detail. For blurry images, keep the move small and wide, or replace the photo.
