What is a semantic differential scale?
A semantic differential scale places two opposite adjectives at either end of a line, such as confusing and clear, and asks somebody to choose a point between them. It usually has five or seven positions with no labels in the middle. Osgood and colleagues developed it in the nineteen fifties.
It is the scale you reach for when the thing you are measuring has no natural agree or disagree framing. Asking whether a website felt cluttered or spacious gets a cleaner answer than asking whether somebody agrees the website was cluttered.

Choosing the adjective pairs
The whole method lives or dies on the pairs. They have to be genuine opposites, familiar to the audience, and relevant to the thing being judged. Expensive and cheap is a true pair. Expensive and good value is not, because something can be both. Modern and traditional works for a brand; modern and broken does not, because the two words are not on the same dimension. Six to ten pairs is a workable set, and researchers have long grouped them into three families: evaluation, which covers good and bad, potency, which covers strong and weak, and activity, which covers fast and slow. Mixing the families gives you a profile rather than a single score. Pre test the pairs with a handful of people from the audience, because words that read as opposites to the person writing the survey often do not to anybody else.
How many points, and whether to label them
Seven points is traditional for this scale, more so than for agreement items, because respondents are placing something on a continuum rather than picking a category. Five works when the audience is broad or the survey is long. Labelling only the two ends is standard and is part of what distinguishes the technique, since labelling every point turns it into an ordinary rating scale with adjective anchors. That said, an unlabelled midpoint invites people who have no view to park there, so decide deliberately whether you want a midpoint at all. Keep the direction of the pairs consistent within a block unless you are deliberately reversing some to catch inattentive answering, and if you do reverse any, remember to reverse them back before you analyse.
Reading the results
The output of a semantic differential block is a profile rather than a number. Plot the average position for each pair down a single chart and the shape tells you more than any individual mean: a brand that reads as clear, fast and plain has a different problem from one that reads as confusing, slow and premium. Comparing profiles across two groups, or across before and after a redesign, is where the method earns its place. Treat the positions as ordinal when you are being careful, which means reporting medians and distributions rather than only means, and be wary of averaging across pairs to produce a single score, since the pairs are measuring different dimensions and the average of them means very little.
Where it goes wrong
Four failures repeat. Pairs that are not opposites, which produces answers nobody can interpret. Too many pairs, which turns a perception exercise into a chore and produces straight lining down the middle. Jargon at the ends, such as intuitive and unintuitive, which most people will not distinguish reliably. And using the scale for things that are simply good or bad, where a plain rating question would be easier to answer and easier to report. There is also a translation trap: adjective pairs rarely survive translation intact, so a multilingual survey needs the pairs checked by a speaker rather than run through a translation of the English.
Building one in a form
There is no dedicated semantic differential field, and the closest honest build is a matrix. A matrix is rows by columns, with radio style allowing one answer per row, so each adjective pair becomes a row and the five or seven positions become the columns. Put the left hand adjective in the row label and the right hand one in the last column heading, or write the row label as plain against distinctive so both ends are visible on a phone. A matrix exports as one column with each statement and its answer joined as Statement: Answer, so plan to split that column before charting the profile. Questions people ask
How is it different from a Likert scale?
A Likert item gives a statement and asks how strongly somebody agrees. A semantic differential gives no statement at all, just two opposite words with space between them. The practical difference is that agreement items invite people to agree out of politeness, while a bipolar pair gives no obviously agreeable end to drift towards.
Should the positive adjective always be on the right?
Consistency matters more than direction. Putting the favourable word on the same side throughout makes the profile easy to read, though some researchers deliberately alternate to stop people answering on autopilot. If you alternate, keep a record of which items were reversed, because forgetting to flip them back is a common and silent analysis error.
Can it be used on a phone?
Yes, with care. A seven point grid with long adjective labels either side is hard to read on a narrow screen, and long row text in a matrix wraps until the grid becomes unusable. Keep the adjectives to one word each, consider five points instead of seven on mobile heavy audiences, and test the block on a real phone before sending it.
How many pairs is too many?
Past about ten, response quality drops noticeably and people begin selecting the middle position to finish. If you need more dimensions than that, split them across two blocks separated by another question type, or drop the pairs that are not going to change any decision. The list is almost always longer than it needs to be on the first draft.
Can I average the positions into one score?
You can, but be careful about what it means. Averaging across pairs that measure different dimensions produces a number that moves for reasons you cannot trace. If a single score is genuinely needed, build it from pairs that have been shown to hang together, and report the individual pairs alongside it so the score can be interpreted.
Is it suitable for customer satisfaction?
Not usually. Satisfaction has a natural high and low end, so a rating scale asks it more directly and is easier for respondents. Semantic differential earns its place when you want to know how something is perceived rather than how well it performed, which is why it appears more often in brand and design research than in service feedback.
