Screen recorder online

This screen recorder runs in your browser: press start, pick a screen, a window or a tab, and everything on it is recorded, with your microphone and the tab's sound if you choose. Stop when you are done, play the recording back on the page and save it as a WebM file. Nothing is installed and nothing leaves your computer.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose the sound

Tick Record my microphone to narrate. Leave Include tab or system sound on to capture what the tab plays, where the browser offers it.

  2. 2

Start and pick what to share

Press Choose what to record and start. The browser asks which screen, window or tab; recording begins as soon as you pick one.

  3. 3

    Record, pause, stop

A timer and the size so far count up. Pause holds the recording without ending it. Stop and review, or the browser's own Stop sharing button, ends it.

  4. 4

    Review and save

Play it back in the page, then press Download .webm. Record again starts fresh, so save first if you want to keep the last one.

How it records without uploading

Two browser features do the work. Screen Capture asks you which surface to share and hands the page a live video stream of it; the page never sees anything you did not pick, and the browser shows its own sharing indicator the whole time. MediaRecorder then encodes that stream into WebM as it arrives, a second at a time, and the pieces stay in the page's memory. When you stop, they are joined into one file and the length is written into its header, so the file shows its duration and can be scrubbed in any player. Nothing is sent anywhere at any point.

Screen, window or tab

A whole screen records everything, including notifications that pop up, so turn those off first. A window follows one application even when other windows cover it, and is the tidy choice for a demo of one program. A tab records only that browser tab and is the only option in most browsers that carries the tab's sound, which makes it the right pick for recording a web app or a video call in the browser. The recording takes the size of what you shared, so a tab on a large monitor gives a large video; resize the window before starting if you want a standard 1920 by 1080 frame.

A recording or a tutorial video

A raw recording is the right tool when someone needs to see exactly what happened: a bug report, a walkthrough for a colleague, a quick answer to a support question. A polished tutorial is a different job. The OneCraft video generator captures the screen too, but it takes still screenshots, one each time you press Capture step, then turns them into a narrated tutorial with a cursor glide, a click ripple and a zoom on each marked spot. It records no motion video. Tutorial videos are a Starter plan feature, and the capture needs a desktop browser, like this page.

Limits worth knowing

The output is WebM only. It plays in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and in recent Safari versions, and uploads to most video platforms, but some editors and phones want MP4, and converting needs a separate tool. Screen sharing exists only in desktop browsers. The recording grows in memory at up to about 25 MB a minute, so very long sessions can exhaust a low memory machine; stop and save every half hour or so. On a Mac the browser itself needs Screen Recording permission in System Settings the first time. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, ever.

Limits

  • WebM only. There is no MP4 output, because making MP4 in the browser needs an encoder this page does not load.
  • Desktop browsers only. Phones and tablets do not let a page share the screen, and Safari support is partial: where it cannot record WebM the tool says so rather than starting.
  • The recording is held in memory until you save it, up to about 25 MB a minute, so save long recordings promptly and keep sessions under an hour.
  • Sound from a window share is never included, and system sound depends on the browser and system: usually a tab, or the whole screen on Windows.

What it does not do

  • It does not record a webcam picture in a corner.
  • It does not trim, edit or annotate the recording.
  • It does not save automatically. Closing the tab before saving loses the recording.

Questions people ask

Why is there no sound in my screen recording?

Window shares never carry sound, and most browsers only pass sound from a single tab, or from the whole screen on Windows. Share a tab and switch on the audio option in the browser's picker. For your voice, tick Record my microphone before starting and allow the microphone when asked. The page warns you when a share arrives silent.

How do I turn the WebM into an MP4?

Any desktop video editor that imports WebM can export MP4, as can free converters such as HandBrake or VLC. Many platforms accept WebM directly, including YouTube, so check before converting. This page does not convert, because encoding MP4 in a browser needs a large encoder download this tool avoids.

Does the recording show a watermark or a time limit?

No watermark is added, and there is no fixed time limit. The practical limit is memory: the recording is held in the page until you save it, at up to about 25 MB a minute. A ten minute recording is roughly 250 MB at most, which any current computer handles; save and start again for very long sessions.

Can people on a video call see that I am recording?

This page does not tell anyone; it only records what your own screen shows. Your browser does show its own sharing indicator while capture is on. Recording a call can still be subject to consent laws where you or the other people are, so tell them before you start, as you would with any recorder.

Will it record in high resolution?

It records at the size of what you share, up to 30 frames a second, so a full HD screen gives a 1920 by 1080 video and a 4K screen a larger one. The bitrate is held to about 3 Mbps to keep files manageable, which keeps text sharp on mostly still screens but softens fast motion such as games.

Can I pause and carry on later?

Yes, within one session. Pause holds the recording and the timer, and Resume carries on into the same file, so the pause leaves no gap. Closing or reloading the tab ends everything, so the recording cannot be resumed after that. Save it with Download .webm before you leave the page.
