An A4 flyer works with about 100 words. The 372 finished flyer designs counted on this site have a median of 108 printed words, and half of them carry between 77 and 132. Only 1 in 20 goes under 40 words, and those lean on a single strong photo; the wordiest are explainers meant to be kept and read.
What was counted
Each of the 124 flyer examples on this site shows three designs of the same flyer at A4 portrait, so the set is 372 designs for fictional Australian businesses, events and sales, counted on 21 October 2026. A script took each design’s rendered text and counted every printed word: logo initials, eyebrow lines, headline, body, prices, opening hours and contact details. Logo marks and photos carry no words, so a photo led design counts low.
The flyers were written to be printed and used, so the count says how much copy a finished, readable flyer carries. It does not say which length gets more calls.
Where the words go
The headline is short: a median of 4 words, about 4% of the page. Everything else is the offer and the response. A typical design in the middle of the range, such as the accountant flyer’s tax time version at 87 words, has an eyebrow line, a six word headline, a line about who the practice is, three priced services with a one line note each, and a phone number, email and web address.
The same flyer’s three designs show how layout changes the count. The tax time design carries 87 words, a monthly packages design 116, and a three card layout with a client quote 148. Same business, same offer, three different jobs for the page.
The short end and the long end
Nineteen designs carry fewer than 40 words, and they share a pattern: one photo, a headline, one offer line and a contact. A chimney sweep’s stove photo design and a dietitian’s meal prep photo design each carry 15 words. They work where the photo says what the business does.
At the long end, 103 designs carry 130 words or more. The four longest are all handouts meant to be read rather than glanced at: a beauty retailer’s guide to reading a product label at 388 words, a back to school flyer setting out lay-by and exchange terms at 256, a weekly deals flyer explaining unit pricing at 240, and a product drop lookbook with returns details at 229. A flyer like that is closer to a leaflet, and the leaflet against flyer page draws the line.
By kind of business
Trades and home service flyers run a little longer, a median of 114 words, because they list services and licence details. Professional services sit at 108, health and wellness at 102. The differences are small: the job the flyer does matters more than the industry.
A word budget for your flyer
- Noticeboard or shop window: 40 to 80 words. Headline, one line, the offer, one way to respond.
- Letterbox or handout: 80 to 130 words. Add a short list of services or prices.
- Price list or explainer meant to be kept: up to about 200, with headings and lists.
- Headline: about four words, naming the offer, event or service.
- Cut praise of the business before facts, and facts the reader only needs after calling.
The Nielsen Norman Group’s research on how people read on screens found they scan rather than read word by word, and a flyer seen in passing is scanned even harder. Plain language guidance from the Australian Government Style Manual applies too: short sentences, common words, the important thing first. For what the words should say, see what to put on a flyer, how to write flyer copy and flyer headline length.
In the product
The flyer generator writes copy into the slots of a design, and every slot has a minimum and maximum length, so long copy is rewritten shorter rather than cut off. The fill instructions forbid inventing prices, dates, phone numbers or addresses, and an optional slot is left out rather than padded. Every design comes in all 8 sizes, from A4 to an Instagram post. The A4 flyer maker page shows the print size, and the guide to creating a flyer for Instagram and print covers the brief.
| Words on the flyer | Designs | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under 40 | 19 | 5% |
| 40 to 59 | 33 | 9% |
| 60 to 79 | 44 | 12% |
| 80 to 99 | 67 | 18% |
| 100 to 129 | 106 | 28% |
| 130 or more | 103 | 28% |

A finished example
Somebody choosing an accountant from a flyer is choosing on two things, what it costs and whether the practice is legitimate, so each of these prints fixed prices and a registered tax agent number. They are for Ledger & Lane, a fictional three accountant practice above a bakery, and they cover the July to October tax season and the monthly work that follows it.

How many words should a flyer headline have?
About four in this set, which is roughly 4% of the words on the page. A headline names the offer or the event in words someone can take in from a few steps away; the details go underneath. The flyer headline length post counts headlines on their own and explains why short ones work.
Is 200 words too many for a flyer?
For a handout that people take home and read, not necessarily: a few designs here run past 200 words, such as a weekly deals flyer that explains unit pricing and a guide to reading a beauty product label. For a noticeboard or a letterbox, 200 words is too many, because nobody stops long enough to read them.
Do social media flyers need fewer words than print?
Usually, because a post is seen at phone size for a second or two. The designs counted here are all A4 portrait, the print layout. The same copy at Instagram post size has less room per word, so cut to the headline, one offer line and the call to action, and put the detail in the caption.
What should I cut first when a flyer has too many words?
Adjectives about the business, then anything a reader would only need after they have called you, such as long terms or a full service list. Keep the offer, the price, the date and the way to respond. The flyers here that sit under 60 words keep exactly those and let one photo carry the rest.
Should a flyer use bullet points?
Yes for lists of services or prices, which is how most of the 100 to 130 word designs here are organised: a headline, a short line, three to five priced items, then contact details. Bullets let a reader find their item without reading the others. A single offer needs no list at all.

How long should a flyer headline be? 168 designs measured
A flyer headline should be about four words long: that is the median across the 168 finished flyer designs on this site, and 132 of them use five words or fewer. The same headlines run to a median of 21 characters and are set about three and a half times larger than the body text, which is what lets them work from across a room.
Should you use a brochure or a flyer?
A flyer is a single sheet that makes one offer to many people at a glance, while a brochure is a folded or multi page piece that walks a reader through a business or a product in order. Choose a flyer when the reader needs one fact and one action, and a brochure when they need to compare, understand and keep it.
Direct mail statistics, from the panel data
The best published direct mail statistics measure what people do with mail rather than a single response rate. JICMAIL's UK panel found 6% of mail prompted a purchase in the first quarter of 2024, up from 4.2% a year earlier, and business mail held attention for 175 seconds an item.
