How many references in a research poster?

Three to five references is enough for a research poster, and three is the most common count: 59 of the 80 finished A0 boards counted here list exactly three. Poster guides agree the list should be short and selective, with anything longer in a handout.

A research poster needs three to five references: the sources the study depends on, not a full bibliography. Across the 80 finished A0 research posters on this site, 73 print a numbered reference list with a median of three entries, 59 list exactly three, and no board lists more than six. Poster guides say the same: a short, selective list in small type at the bottom.

What was counted

The set is the 80 research poster examples on this site, read on 21 October 2026: 40 portrait and 40 landscape A0 boards across health and life sciences, social sciences, engineering, physical sciences and business research, each for a fictional study. A script found each board’s references block, counted the numbered entries, and checked the rest of the text for author and year citations.

The boards were written to be complete and readable at A0, so the count shows what fits and works on a finished board, not what any conference requires.

Three is the norm

59 boards list exactly three references, six list four, five list two, and one each lists one, five and six. The pattern holds in every discipline group, with medians of three in life and health sciences, social sciences, engineering and computing, physical sciences and business research. The agriculture research poster is typical: one reference for the yield and protein trade off it builds on, one for its plot design and one for its lodging scores.

Three works because each reference has a job on a poster: the method you followed, the result you are extending, and the one you disagree with. A fourth or fifth is worth it when the method combines sources. A twelfth belongs in the paper.

Boards without a list

Seven boards print no numbered list. Two cite inline instead, giving author and year in the text, a style that suits a poster built around one large figure. Five print no references at all, and all five use layouts that have no references block, such as wide comparison and hero figure layouts. That is a design choice worth checking before you commit to a layout: if your field expects references, choose a board with a block for them.

What the guides say

A rule for your board

  1. List three to five references in a block after the conclusions.
  2. Pick them by job: method, prior result, contrasting result.
  3. Use one style consistently, shortened if space is tight.
  4. Set them a little smaller than body text, still readable at a metre or two.
  5. Put the full list in a handout or online.

For the rest of the board, see how many words on a research poster, how many figures on a research poster and the page on citation styles on a poster.

In the product

The poster tab has 40 A0 board templates, 20 portrait and 20 landscape. A references block is on 34 of them, and on those boards it is a required block, so a generated poster fills it. The other six boards have no references block, which is why five boards here print none. Boards export as PNG or PDF, and an A0 portrait board exports at 3312 by 4680 pixels. The research poster template page shows the boards, and the guide to adding charts and diagrams covers the figure blocks that sit beside the references.

A finished example

A variety trial poster is read table first, because a grower wants the ranking and the agronomist wants the spread. This A0 landscape board puts an eight row results table across the middle, with yield, protein and lodging for each variety, and keeps the method and the caveats on either side of it.

Questions people ask

Do I need references on a research poster?

Usually yes, for the few sources your study depends on, such as the method you followed or the result you are extending. Some conferences say what they expect in their poster instructions, so check those first. A poster with no references at all reads as if the work came from nowhere, even when the abstract carried the citations.

What citation style should a poster use?

The one your field and the conference use, applied consistently. Butler University's poster guide suggests choosing a style such as APA, MLA or Chicago and staying consistent, set in a small but readable size. Short author and year entries save space; full titles help a reader find the paper later without asking you.

Where do references go on a poster?

In a small block near the end of the reading order, after the conclusions and before the acknowledgements, as Butler University's poster guide sets out. CASRAI's guide puts it at the bottom or in a corner. Readers who want the sources know to look there, and nobody else has to read past them.

How do I share more references than fit on the poster?

Put the full list in a handout or a document linked from your conference profile, and keep the three to five that matter most on the board. Butler University's guide suggests a handout for extra citations. A QR code is another option on a printed poster, though it needs space and a reader with a phone camera ready.

Should references be smaller than the body text?

Yes, a little. They are read by the few people who want to follow up, not by everyone walking past. On the boards here references are set at 17 to 20 pixels on the A0 canvas against 22 for body text, so they stay legible at reading distance without competing with the findings.
