Replicated variety trial, 32 plots, one season

Agriculture research poster example

A variety trial poster is read table first, because a grower wants the ranking and the agronomist wants the spread. This A0 landscape board puts an eight row results table across the middle, with yield, protein and lodging for each variety, and keeps the method and the caveats on either side of it.

Eight wheat varieties, four replicates, one season: yield, protein and lodging at one district site

ABSTRACT
Eight wheat varieties were grown in four replicate plots each at one district site over one season, 32 plots sown in May and harvested in December. Mean yield ran from 3.1 to 4.4 tonnes a hectare. The top variety beat the district check by 0.6 tonnes, and the two highest yielding varieties carried the lowest protein, which is the trade a grower is choosing between.
METHODS
Design. Randomised complete block, four replicates, eight varieties, 32 plots of 10 by 2 metres on one soil type at one district site.
Sowing. Sown 14 May at 80 kilograms a hectare on 25 centimetre rows, with 60 kilograms a hectare of nitrogen at sowing and no in crop top dress.
Season. Growing season rainfall 232 millimetres, 38 millimetres below the site mean, with one frost event at flowering recorded on 2 September.
Harvest. Plots harvested 9 December with a plot header, grain weighed at plot level and moisture corrected to 12.5 per cent before yield was calculated.
Measures. Yield in tonnes a hectare, protein by near infrared on a subsample of each plot, and lodging scored 0 to 9 by two assessors before harvest.

INTRODUCTION
A single site and one season cannot rank varieties for a region, and this trial does not claim to. What it can do is measure eight varieties in one set of conditions with enough replication that the differences are readable, and report the protein and lodging a yield table omits.

RESULTS
Aurelia yielded 4.4 tonnes a hectare, 0.6 above the district check at 3.8. Standard deviation across the four plots of each variety ran from 0.09 to 0.21 tonnes, so the top three varieties separate from the bottom three but not from each other. Protein fell as yield rose, from 12.6 to 10.6 per cent.

DISCUSSION
Two varieties cleared the check and both lost about a protein point doing it, which is worth a grade at delivery. Lodging separates them: Aurelia scored 2 and Fernlea 5 in one season.

Block by block

What each block on the board is for, in the order a reader walks it.

Title band and three authors
The title states the design in its own words: eight varieties, four replicates, one season. Three authors sit over two affiliations, and the plot data is named in the figure source line.
Abstract
The design, the plot count and size, the sowing and harvest dates, the yield range and the trade that the trial found: the two highest yielding varieties also carried the lowest protein, which is the decision a grower is actually making.
Why one site, one season
A short introduction block that heads off the objection a reviewer will raise. The trial does not claim a regional ranking; it measures eight varieties under one set of conditions with enough replication for the differences to be readable.
Methods as a labelled protocol
Five labelled entries: the randomised complete block design, the sowing rate and nitrogen, the season rainfall and the frost at flowering, the harvest and moisture correction, and how yield, protein and lodging were measured.
Variety results table
Eight rows, one per variety, with yield in tonnes a hectare, protein per cent and a lodging score from 0 to 9. The district check is labelled in its own row. The table carries no caption, because on this layout a caption line sits below the block and its descenders are cut.
Figure 1, yield by variety
The same eight yields as vertical bars, labelled V1 to V8 in table order with the key in the caption. Short axis labels keep the tick row clear of the legend band, which on a chart this wide would otherwise collide with it.
Results and the headline number
The results block gives the plot to plot standard deviations, which run from 0.09 to 0.21 tonnes, and the stat block carries the headline: 4.4 tonnes a hectare, 0.6 above the check. The protein trade is stated in the same block.
Discussion, takeaways and references
Two varieties cleared the check and both lost about a protein point doing it, which is worth a grade at delivery. Four checked points and four references close the board.

What makes this board work

The table is the centre of the board

Eight varieties with yield, protein and lodging sit in one table across the middle of the landscape canvas. A grower can read the ranking without reading a sentence, and the two numbers that qualify the ranking are in the same row rather than in a paragraph below it.

The check variety is in the table

Darnell is labelled as the district check and carries its own row at 3.8 tonnes, so the headline of 0.6 above the check can be verified on the board. A trial poster that names a check without showing it asks the reader to take the comparison on trust.

The limits are stated as a takeaway

One site, one season and four replicates is the last of the four checked points, not a footnote. This trial cannot rank varieties for a region, and saying so on the board is what makes the rest of the numbers usable.

Questions people ask

What goes on an agriculture research poster?

The trial design and its replication, the site and season conditions, a results table with one row per treatment, a figure of the headline measure, the comparison against a check or district standard, and the limits of a single site. Sowing and harvest dates belong in the methods, not in the abstract.

Should a variety trial poster show error bars?

It should show the spread somewhere. A figure block draws the bars from the values you give it and does not add error bars, so this board reports the plot to plot standard deviation in the results block and keeps the figure to the eight means. State the spread in words if the chart cannot draw it.

How many rows can a poster table hold?

This layout takes eight rows and four columns, and the type scales down as rows are added, so eight rows of short values stay readable at A0. Check the row cap first, because only three of the forty poster designs carry a table block at all.

Landscape or portrait for a trial poster?

Landscape suits a table led board, because a wide table can carry four columns without crowding and still leave room for the method beside it. Both A0 orientations exist, at 1189 by 841 millimetres and 841 by 1189, with twenty designs authored for each.

How do I show a district check on the board?

Give it a row in the table and label it, as this board does with Darnell at 3.8 tonnes, so the headline difference of 0.6 can be checked by anyone standing at the board. A check named only in the text is the most common unverifiable claim on a trial poster.

Can I print this at 300 dots per inch?

Not from the export. The working canvas is 2340 by 1656 pixels for A0 landscape and the export captures at twice that, 4680 by 3312 pixels, which is about 100 dots per inch at full size. It is RGB with no bleed and no crop marks, so a print shop that needs CMYK will convert it.
