App icon sizes for iPhone and Android
An iPhone app needs a 1024 x 1024 pixel App Store icon, from which current Xcode versions can generate the smaller sizes. A Google Play listing needs a 512 x 512 pixel, 32 bit PNG of up to 1024 KB. On the phone itself, Android uses adaptive icons: foreground and background layers of 108 x 108 dp, with the logo kept inside the central 66 x 66 dp safe zone.
One square logo is not enough. The stores, the home screen and Android's shaped masks each crop and scale it differently, so start from a large master and respect each platform's safe area.

| Where | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| App Store icon (iPhone) | 1024 x 1024 px | Square artwork; iOS applies the rounded mask |
| Google Play store listing | 512 x 512 px | 32 bit PNG, sRGB, up to 1024 KB, full square; Play applies the mask |
| Android adaptive icon layers | 108 x 108 dp each | Foreground, background and optional monochrome layer |
| Android safe zone | 66 x 66 dp in the centre | Never clipped by any device mask; keep the logo inside |
| Android 12 splash icon | 240 x 240 dp (with background) or 288 x 288 dp (without) | Must fit a 160 dp or 192 dp circle |
| Expo app config | One 1024 x 1024 PNG | Expo generates platform sizes from app.json icon fields |
What the sizes are for
Each size serves a different place. The store icon is what people see when browsing or searching the App Store and Google Play, at large sizes, so it must be crisp. Home screen icons are drawn small, where fine detail disappears. Android adds a twist: device makers apply different shapes, such as circles, squircles and rounded squares, so Android icons are built from layers that the system masks and can animate. Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and Google's Play icon specification describe the exact requirements.
How to prepare one icon for everything
Design the icon as a simple, bold mark that reads at 48 pixels. Export a 1024 x 1024 master. For iPhone, provide square artwork without your own rounded corners or transparency; the system applies the mask. For Google Play, export 512 x 512 as a full square, since Play applies its own corner radius, which its specification puts at 30 percent of the icon size. For Android adaptive icons, place the logo in a foreground layer within the 66 dp safe zone on a 108 dp canvas, and give the background its own layer, often a solid colour. Add a monochrome layer for themed icons.
When it matters
The icon is the most viewed piece of design in any app: on the store page, in search results, on the home screen every day, in notifications and settings. A small business app competes with dozens of familiar icons on a phone, so legibility at small sizes matters more than detail. It also matters for review: Apple can reject builds whose icons are missing, placeholders or misleading.
Common mistakes
Using a wide logo with words, which becomes unreadable when shrunk. Adding rounded corners or a drop shadow that the system then doubles. A transparent background on the iPhone icon. Placing the logo edge to edge on Android, so masks cut it off. Submitting a placeholder icon from a template. Forgetting the monochrome layer, so themed home screens show a generic shape. And an icon that does not match the app's colours or name, which makes people unsure they installed the right app.
Where it shows up in OneCraft
Phone apps built with OneCraft are Expo projects, and the project downloads as a zip with app.json filled, which is where Expo reads the app's icon fields. Builds for Android and iPhone run through Expo on paid plans, as a test build or a store build at 5 credits each, and the owner submits to the App Store and Google Play from their own accounts. Store screenshots have their own sizes, covered on the app store screenshot sizes page.
Questions people ask
What size should an app icon be for the App Store?
1024 x 1024 pixels, square, without transparency, and without rounded corners, which iOS adds itself. Current Xcode versions can use this single image to create every smaller size the system needs, so most apps no longer prepare a long list of icon files by hand.
What size is a Google Play icon?
Google Play's store listing icon is 512 x 512 pixels, a 32 bit PNG in the sRGB colour space, up to 1024 KB, provided as a full square. Google Play applies the rounded mask and shadow. The icon on the phone itself comes from the app's adaptive icon resources, which are separate.
What is the safe zone of an Android adaptive icon?
The central 66 x 66 dp of the 108 x 108 dp layer. Device makers mask icons into different shapes, and only this area is guaranteed to be visible. Google's guidance also says to use a logo at least 48 x 48 dp and no larger than the safe zone.
Can I use the same icon for iPhone and Android?
You can use the same artwork, but prepare it twice. iPhone wants a square image that iOS rounds. Android wants separate foreground and background layers so it can mask and animate them. Tools such as Expo take one large image and produce both from your app config.
Does my app icon need to match my logo?
It should be recognisably yours, but it does not need to be the full logo. Many brands use a single letter, a symbol or a simplified mark, because full logos with words are unreadable at home screen size. Keep the colours consistent with your website and signage.
