What is a sizzle reel?
A sizzle reel is a short promotional video that strings together the most exciting moments of a project, person, event or product, set to music, to generate interest and win a yes. It sells a feeling and a promise rather than explaining details, and it is usually one to two minutes long or shorter.
The term comes from television, where producers cut sizzle reels to sell a show to a network before it is made. It has spread to agencies, events, startups and creatives, and the job is still the same: make someone want more in very little time.

Where sizzle reels come from
Television producers pitching a show have little to show yet, so they cut a reel from test footage, the host's past work or comparable material that conveys the energy of the show. Adobe describes sizzle reels as short promotional videos used to sell TV shows to networks, raise money for films and give an overview of a new product, serving as proof of concept by generating excitement. Agencies and event organisers later took the term for highlight videos of past campaigns and conferences, shown to win the next client or sponsor.
How long and how fast
Adobe notes that sizzle reels were traditionally as long as five minutes, and that the average is now closer to one to two minutes because of shorter viewing habits. For social media placements, 15 to 30 seconds is common. Pace is the defining feature: short shots, cuts on the beat, very little dialogue and a few on screen titles carrying the key claims. The aim is to leave the viewer wanting more, so a sizzle reel that tries to explain everything has turned into a different kind of video.
What goes in one
Start with the strongest moment, not a slow build. Show people reacting, not only products or venues. Add two or three proof points as titles, such as a number of attendees or a client result. Choose music first and cut to it. End with one clear request: book a meeting, buy a ticket, back the project. Label anything that is a mock up or from a past event, because a reel used to sell something is still advertising and should not mislead.
Common mistakes
Running too long because every clip feels precious. Using footage you do not have rights to, including music. Letting text sit on screen too briefly to read. Mixing clips with very different colour and quality so the reel looks stitched together. Forgetting the call to action. And making a demo reel when the audience wanted a sizzle reel, or the reverse: a hiring manager wants to know what you did, while an investor wants to feel the opportunity.
Making a short sizzle style promo in the builder
The video builder makes promos at three lengths, with targets of about 10, 18 and 30 seconds and 3 to 12 scenes depending on length, in landscape 1920 by 1080 or vertical 1080 by 1920. Promo scenes run 2.5 to 4 seconds each, which matches the quick cutting a sizzle reel needs, and when stock footage is enabled the director can add one to three Pexels clips to a promo. Your own footage goes into clip scenes as MP4, WebM or MOV up to 200 MB with a trim start and end. Music comes from a library of 13 tracks or your own upload, and ducks under narration. A two minute reel cut from many of your own clips is better made in a traditional editor.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a sizzle reel and a demo reel?
A demo reel, or showreel, shows an individual's own work to win a job, and each clip should make clear what the person did. A sizzle reel sells a project, event or company to buyers, backers or attendees. Adobe lists demo reels among the other names for sizzle reels, so the terms do blur, but the audience and the job are different.
Do I need original footage for a sizzle reel?
Not always. Pitch reels often use test shoots, stock footage, past work or comparable material to convey the idea, and event reels use footage from previous editions. Whatever you use must be licensed for the purpose, and anything that is not from the actual project should not be presented as if it were.
What music works for a sizzle reel?
Something with a clear beat and steady build, licensed for commercial use, that matches the brand's tone. Cut the shots to the beat and keep vocals low or absent so on screen text and any narration stay clear. Avoid popular songs you have no licence for, since platforms may mute or block the video.
Where should a sizzle reel be used?
On a pitch call or in a meeting before the detail, on the top of a landing page, in a sponsorship or investor deck, and cut down to 15 to 30 seconds for social posts and ads. A single master edit with shorter versions saves time and keeps the message consistent across places.
How much does a sizzle reel cost to make?
It ranges from nothing beyond your own time, using existing clips and an editor, to many thousands for a production company that shoots new footage. The main costs are filming, editing time, music licensing and motion graphics. Reusing footage from previous events or campaigns is the usual way to keep it low.
