Resignation with immediate effect, Hannah Ruiz to Bramble and Oak Bistro
Immediate resignation letter after a family emergency
An immediate resignation letter ends employment on the day it is sent, acknowledges the notice the contract required and settles final pay. This one page letter from a kitchen supervisor leaves the same day for a family emergency interstate, offers to forgo pay for the unworked notice and returns her keys by tracked courier.

What an employer may and may not deduct
Leaving without notice does not cancel pay already earned. Wages for hours worked and accrued annual leave must be paid. Whether the employer can recover anything for the notice not given depends on the rules where you work. In Australia some awards allow an employer to withhold up to a stated amount for notice not given, while deductions outside those rules need written consent. In the UK, deductions from wages generally need a contract term or written agreement. An employer cannot hold back final pay until property is returned unless the contract allows a deduction for it.
Notice rules in three systems
Australia: the National Employment Standards set employer notice, while employee notice usually comes from the award, agreement or contract, often one to four weeks. United Kingdom: an employee with a month's service must give at least one week's notice unless the contract says more. United States: most employment is at will, so two weeks is a courtesy rather than a legal rule, unless a contract says otherwise. In each case an employer can agree to release an employee early, which is why asking, as this letter does, is worthwhile.
How to adapt this document
Change the names, role and date, and keep the reason to one line; you do not owe the employer private detail. Check your contract for the notice period and name it accurately. Decide whether to offer to forgo notice pay or to ask the employer to waive notice instead. List the property you hold and how it is being returned. If you can work a day or two, offer a last day a little later rather than today, because even a short handover helps keep a good reference.
What makes this document work
Effective today, stated twice
The first paragraph says the resignation has immediate effect and names the last day, Tuesday 22 September 2026, in bold. There is no room to read it as notice starting today, which is the commonest confusion with short resignation letters.
The notice problem is faced, not hidden
A callout acknowledges the two weeks of notice in the contract, says she cannot work it and that she does not expect pay for it. That removes the employer's main grievance and makes a dispute over final pay much less likely.
Loose ends are tied off
The list asks for final pay with accrued leave and a separation certificate, and gives the courier reference for the returned keys and uniforms. The last line says where the prep list and orders are, so the kitchen can run tomorrow.
Questions people ask
Can I resign with immediate effect?
You can leave, but if your contract or the law requires notice and you do not give it, you may be in breach and lose pay for the notice period. Some employers agree to waive notice, especially in an emergency, so ask. A clear letter that acknowledges the notice and explains why it cannot be worked often settles the matter amicably.
Will I still get my final pay if I leave without notice?
Yes. Wages for hours already worked and accrued, untaken annual leave are owed whatever the reason for leaving, and must be paid in the usual time frame. What you may lose is pay for the notice period you did not work. Ask for your final pay in writing, as this letter does, and keep your last payslips.
Can my employer take notice pay out of my wages?
Only if the law and your contract allow it. In some systems an award or agreement lets an employer withhold an amount for notice not given, within limits; in others any deduction needs written consent. Check your contract and the rules where you work before agreeing, and ask for any deduction to be itemised on the final payslip.
Should I call my employer before sending an immediate resignation?
Yes, if you can. A short call explains the emergency in a way a letter cannot and lets your manager plan cover for the next shift. Send the letter straight after, so the date and the arrangements are on record. If a call is impossible, say so in the letter and offer to talk when you can.
What should I return when I resign immediately?
Everything that belongs to the employer: keys, access cards, uniforms, equipment, documents and passwords. If you cannot return them in person, use a tracked courier and give the reference in the letter. Returning property promptly avoids any argument about deductions and keeps a good reference within reach.

Promotion letter template with the new title, pay and start date in one table
A promotion letter has to be warm enough to read like good news and precise enough to work as a variation to the contract. This one names the new title and who reports in, puts $78,000 next to the old $66,300, fixes the start date, and lists the duties that move with the job.
Probation confirmation letter with the confirmed terms in a table
Probation usually ends in silence, which leaves the employee guessing and the employer with no record that the period closed. This letter fixes the end date, restates five terms that now stand unchanged, names one thing the employee did well and sets the next review, all on one page.
Retirement congratulations letter to a groundskeeper after 22 years
A retirement congratulations letter from an employer has two jobs: to thank someone specifically for what they did, and to confirm the practical arrangements for their last weeks. This one names a groundskeeper's three biggest contributions in numbers, then sets out his final day, final pay and farewell in a short table and a callout.
