Student Merit Award, Kestrel Park Primary School

Student award certificate for a primary school merit award

A student award certificate tells a child, and their family, exactly what they did well, on a page they can take home. This example from a primary school gives a merit award to a Year 3 student who read 20 books in a term and wrote a review of each one for the class library.

Writing for a young reader

A primary school certificate has two readers: the child, who may be just learning to read, and the family. Use short words and one sentence. Put the action first and the detail second. Choose details the child will recognise, such as the number of books or the name of the project, rather than curriculum language. Education frameworks describe learning in terms of what students can do; a merit award sentence that names something the student did fits naturally with that approach and gives families something specific to praise at home.

Fair and varied recognition

Teachers often find that the same confident students collect most awards. A simple class list with a mark next to each name when an award is given makes gaps visible. Vary what is recognised across a year: effort, kindness, persistence, creativity, improvement and leadership, as well as results. Two students who do the same thing can be recognised in different weeks with differently worded sentences, so certificates never feel copied.

How to adapt this document

Change the badge to your school, set the award name your school uses, and write the sentence from what you saw this week. Update the cards with the class, term and date. Keep one signature unless your school policy asks for two. If your school prints in batches, prepare one certificate, then duplicate it and change only the name, class and sentence for each student before exporting.

What makes this document work

The reason is something a child can repeat

Read 20 books this term and wrote a review of each one is a sentence an eight year old can say at home. A child who can explain their award is more likely to keep doing the thing it praised.

It shows the effect on others

The reviews have helped his classmates choose their next book. Linking the effort to its benefit for the class rewards contribution as well as personal achievement, which is what many school values programs aim for.

Small facts, clearly placed

Class 3B, Term 3 and 18 September 2026 sit on cards. Families keep these certificates for years, and the class, term and date make each one easy to place later in a child's school story.

Questions people ask

What should a student award certificate say?

The school, the award name, the student's name and class, one sentence on what they did, the term or date, and the teacher's signature. The sentence should describe an action or result, such as reading 20 books or helping a new student settle in, rather than a trait like being a good student.

How do you write merit award comments for students?

Start with a verb and a specific detail: for reading, for helping, for persisting with. Add the result if there is one. Keep it to one sentence of plain words the child can read. Link it to the school's values or learning goals where natural, and make sure each comment in a class is different.

Who signs a student merit award?

Usually the class teacher, who saw the effort, sometimes with the principal or assistant principal for school wide awards. One signature is enough for a class merit award. Print the teacher's name under the line so families know who to thank.

How often should students receive merit awards?

Schools set their own patterns, often a few awards per class each week or fortnight at assembly, aiming for every student to receive at least one over the year. Keeping a simple tally helps teachers notice quieter students who have not yet been recognised.

Should student awards be presented at assembly?

Assembly presentation is common in primary schools and many children enjoy it, but some find it stressful. Teachers can offer quieter options, such as presentation in class or sending the certificate home with a note. The certificate itself should work in either setting.
