Scholarship application questions for a selection round

Ask 15 to 20 in a single round. Never skip the eligibility questions at the top, the need statement that says what the money would change, and one checkable piece of evidence such as a school report. A committee cannot rank an applicant fairly without all three.

A scholarship application has to prove three things before anyone reads an essay: the applicant is eligible, the money would change something real, and the claims can be checked. These questions put eligibility first and keep the written answers to the few a panel can compare side by side.

Which questions to make required

Twelve questions are required, and each is either a rule the scholarship cannot bend or something the committee needs to rank or reach the applicant: the three eligibility checks, name, email, financial circumstances, the two main written answers, the report, the referee's name and email, and the declaration. Caring duties and work hours stay optional, because nobody should have to disclose hardship in detail to be considered.

Three ways to change this bank

For a merit scholarship, delete the financial circumstances question and the caring and work questions, make the achievements table required, and add a number field for the final result or rank. For a bursary paid to current students, replace the eligibility section with enrolment status, student number and year of study, cut the essays to one 150 word statement of circumstances, and add a number field for the shortfall the student is trying to cover. For an interview round, send shortlisted applicants a second short form instead of reopening this one: available dates, any adjustment needed at the interview, and one question they would like to ask the panel. Keep the interview form separate so its answers never sit in the same export as the original scores.

Questions people ask

How many questions should a scholarship application have?

Fifteen to twenty for most rounds, with no more than three written answers. Every extra essay cuts the number of complete applications, and it cuts them hardest among applicants who work or care for someone after school, often the people the scholarship exists for. Pick from the bank here rather than using all 26.

Should a scholarship application ask about family income?

Only if need is a selection criterion, and then as bands rather than an exact figure. A band question with a prefer not to say option lets the committee weigh need without collecting payslips from every applicant. If the scholarship is purely merit based, remove the question entirely, because information that is not used should not be collected.

What makes a good scholarship essay question?

It asks about something only this applicant can answer and that the committee will actually score. Why this course, and what the money would change, both pass. Describe yourself fails, because answers vary so widely in shape that they cannot be compared. Publish the scoring criteria above the questions so applicants write to them.

Can the panel score applications without seeing names?

Yes, if someone prepares the file first. The response export is a CSV with one column per field, so the name, email, address and referee columns can be deleted before the sheet goes to scorers. Give each row a number, keep the key separately, and match scores back to names only after ranking is finished.

What should a scholarship interview ask that the form did not?

Anything that tests a written claim. Ask the applicant to expand on the achievement they listed first, to describe how they would handle a failed first semester, and to explain their course choice without notes. Avoid repeating the essay prompts, since a rehearsed answer tells the panel little it has not already read.

Is a bursary application different from a scholarship application?

Usually a bursary is based on financial need and paid to students already enrolled, while a scholarship may reward merit and start before enrolment. The questions shift with that: a bursary asks about current study and expenses, and it rarely needs an essay. The adaptation above shows which questions to swap.
