1080p vs 1440p: pixels, screens and video uploads

1080p is 1920 by 1080 pixels and 1440p is 2560 by 1440, both 16:9. 1440p has about 78 percent more pixels, 3.69 million against 2.07 million. On a 27 inch monitor that is about 109 pixels per inch against 82, so text and images look visibly sharper.

The choice between 1080p and 1440p comes up twice: when buying a monitor and when exporting a video. The numbers are the same in both cases, but the reasons to pick one differ, because a screen is looked at all day and a video is watched once on whatever screen the viewer has.

The pixel difference in practice

Both are 16:9, so a 1080p image scales to 1440p without cropping, but 1440p has a third more pixels in each direction. Pixel density decides how sharp a screen looks: divide the diagonal pixel count by the screen size. At 24 inches 1080p gives about 92 pixels per inch and 1440p about 122; at 27 inches the figures are about 82 and 109. Around 27 inches, 1080p starts to show soft text and visible pixels at a normal desk distance, which is why 1440p is a popular resolution at that size.

Uploading video at 1080p or 1440p

YouTube's resolution page lists 1080p and 1440p among its recommended 16:9 sizes and calls 1440p 2K. Its encoding page recommends about 8 megabits per second for 1080p and 16 for 1440p at standard frame rates. Uploading at 1440p from a 1080p source adds nothing, because upscaling cannot invent detail. When footage was shot at 1440p or higher, a 1440p upload keeps that sharpness for viewers on larger screens. Most phone viewers will not notice the difference, but they will notice a low bitrate, which shows as blocky motion.

Gaming, design and office work

For games, 1440p asks the graphics card to draw 78 percent more pixels per frame, which lowers frame rates on the same hardware; 1080p remains common for high refresh rate competitive play. For design and photo work, 1440p gives more room for panels and sharper previews. For spreadsheets and documents, the extra density makes long working days easier on the eyes. Operating system scaling can make 1440p text the same size as 1080p while keeping the extra sharpness.

Common mistakes

The first is buying a 27 inch 1080p monitor for detailed work and finding the text fuzzy. The second is exporting video at 1440p with the same bitrate as 1080p, which spreads the same data over more pixels. The third is assuming 2K always means 1440p; in cinema it means 2048 by 1080. The fourth is setting a 1440p monitor to 1080p for games, which can look softer than a native 1080p screen because the image is stretched.

Resolution in the video builder

The video builder makes landscape video at 1920 by 1080 and vertical at 1080 by 1920, so 1080p is the size it makes. Exports are one H.264 MP4 at that size, with a 4K export on the Starter plan and up; there is no 1440p option, so a 1440p delivery would be an upscale of the 1080p export or a downscale of the 4K one. For thumbnails and title cards at 1440p, the blank PNG above is 2560 by 1440 pixels, and the aspect ratio calculator gives matching sizes.

Questions people ask

Is 1440p worth it over 1080p?

On monitors of 27 inches and larger, usually yes, because text and images look clearly sharper. On 24 inch screens the gain is smaller but still visible. For gaming on a modest graphics card, 1080p may be the better trade for higher frame rates.

Can a 1080p video look good on a 1440p screen?

Yes. The video is scaled up to fill the screen, and at normal viewing distances a well encoded 1080p video looks fine. It will not be as sharp as native 1440p footage, but a good bitrate matters more than the extra pixels for most content.

Does YouTube support 1440p uploads?

Yes. YouTube lists 2560 by 1440 among its recommended 16:9 resolutions and gives recommended bitrates of 16 megabits per second at standard frame rates and 24 at high frame rates for SDR video. Viewers can choose 1440p in the player when their device supports it.

Is 1440p the same as QHD?

Yes. QHD, quad HD, is 2560 by 1440, four times the pixels of 720p HD. It is sometimes called WQHD or 2K. It should not be confused with qHD in lower case, an older phone resolution of 960 by 540.

What resolution should I record screen tutorials at?

Record at the resolution your audience will watch, usually 1080p, with the interface scaled so text is large. Recording at 1440p and exporting at 1080p gives slightly crisper text, but only if the recording software and the computer can keep a smooth frame rate.
