Desktop wallpaper size: common screen resolutions
Make a desktop wallpaper at the screen's native resolution. Common sizes are 1920 by 1080 for full HD, 2560 by 1440 for QHD and 3840 by 2160 for 4K, all 16:9. MacBook Air 13 inch screens are 2560 by 1664 and MacBook Pro 14 inch screens 3024 by 1964, which are taller than 16:9.
A desktop wallpaper sits behind every window for months, so it should be sharp at the screen's real resolution and calm where icons and windows go. The awkward part is that laptops and monitors no longer share one shape.

Start from the screen's native pixels
Monitors are sold by resolution: 1920 by 1080 full HD, 2560 by 1440 QHD and 3840 by 2160 4K are the three common 16:9 sizes, matching the resolutions YouTube recommends for 16:9 video. Apple lists its laptop screens on each model's specs page: the MacBook Air at 2560 by 1664 for 13 inch and 2880 by 1864 for 15 inch, and the MacBook Pro at 3024 by 1964 for 14 inch and 3456 by 2234 for 16 inch. A wallpaper at those exact pixels fills the screen with no scaling.
One image for several screens
For a wallpaper that must work on many machines, such as a company wallpaper, make it large, 3840 by 2160 or more, and keep the important part in the centre. On a 16:9 screen it fills exactly; on a taller MacBook screen the system crops the sides slightly or scales it to fill; on an ultrawide 21:9 monitor it is cropped top and bottom. A subtle background colour that extends to the edges makes cropping invisible, while a logo near a corner may be cut off on some screens.
Designing around icons and windows
On Windows the desktop icons line up on the left by default, and the taskbar runs along the bottom. On a Mac, the menu bar runs across the top, icons appear on the right and the dock sits at the bottom. Detailed images or text in those areas fight with the interface. Many good wallpapers keep the subject slightly off centre and leave large calm areas. Dark mode users may prefer darker images, and macOS can switch dynamic wallpapers between light and dark with the system appearance.
Common mistakes
The first is a 1920 by 1080 wallpaper on a 4K screen, which looks soft. The second is a 16:9 image on a MacBook with a logo near the edge that gets cropped. The third is a high contrast pattern behind the desktop icons, which makes their labels hard to read. The fourth is a phone photo in portrait used on a landscape screen, cropped to a thin strip of the original.
Wallpapers and the flyer editor
The flyer editor has no desktop wallpaper canvas. Its landscape sizes are A4 landscape, Facebook Post, LinkedIn Post, Facebook Cover and X header, none of which is 16:9 or 16:10. The image resizer converts an export to a screen resolution, cropping evenly, and the aspect ratio calculator gives exact sizes for unusual screens. The blank PNG above is 3840 by 2160 pixels, a 4K UHD canvas for building a wallpaper in another tool.
Questions people ask
What is the best size for a desktop wallpaper?
The screen's native resolution. If you do not know it, 3840 by 2160 covers 4K screens and scales down cleanly to 2560 by 1440 and 1920 by 1080. For MacBooks, use the model's resolution from Apple's specs page or a slightly taller image so nothing is cropped.
How do I find my screen resolution?
On Windows, open Settings, System, Display and read the display resolution. On a Mac, open System Settings, Displays, or About This Mac, then More Info, which shows the display's native resolution. Note the native figure rather than the scaled setting.
What size is a dual monitor wallpaper?
For two 1920 by 1080 monitors side by side, an image of 3840 by 1080 spans both. For two 2560 by 1440 monitors, use 5120 by 1440. Set the wallpaper to span in the display settings, and keep important detail away from the gap between screens.
Why does my wallpaper look blurry?
Usually the image is smaller than the screen and has been enlarged, or it has been heavily compressed. Use an image at least as large as the screen's native resolution, saved as a high quality JPEG or PNG, and set the fit option to fill rather than stretch.
What format should a wallpaper be?
JPEG works well for photos and keeps file size small. PNG avoids compression artefacts in gradients and illustrations. Both are supported on Windows and macOS. Very large PNG files can slow the login screen slightly, so a high quality JPEG is often the practical choice.
