Instagram profile picture size: 320 x 320 pixels
Upload an Instagram profile picture as a square of at least 320 by 320 pixels. Instagram stores it at that size and shows it as a circle, about 110 pixels across on a profile page and much smaller beside posts and comments, so anything in the corners of the square is cut away.
The profile picture is the smallest image on Instagram and the one shown most often, beside every post, story ring and comment. Its size is easy; its shape is what catches people out, because a square goes in and a circle comes out.

Square in, circle out
Instagram crops the profile picture to a circle inscribed in the square, so about 21 percent of the square, the four corners, is never seen. A logo whose name runs to the edges loses its first and last letters; a portrait framed tight to the chin loses the top of the head. The safe area is the circle itself, and a margin inside it of about a tenth of the width keeps a design from touching the edge when Instagram draws its story ring around it.
Why 320 pixels is enough
The picture is shown at around 110 pixels across on a profile and far smaller next to a comment, so a 320 pixel upload already gives about three device pixels for every displayed pixel on a high density phone. Uploading a 3000 pixel photo is not harmful, but it does not look sharper. What helps is a clear subject: a face filling most of the circle, or a simple mark with strong contrast against the background, readable at 40 pixels, the size it appears in a comment thread.
Logos versus faces
For a person, a face filling about two thirds of the circle, lit from the front and against a plain background, reads best. For a business, a simplified mark works better than a full logo with a tagline, because a tagline at 110 pixels is unreadable. Many brands keep a separate square version of the logo for avatars, with the wordmark removed and the icon enlarged. Using the same image on every platform helps people recognise the account wherever they meet it.
Common mistakes
Uploading a wide logo, which Instagram shrinks to fit the circle so it becomes a thin line. Placing text near the edges of the square. Using a photo with a busy background, which turns into noise at small sizes. Choosing a dark logo on a transparent PNG, which can disappear against Instagram's dark mode. And changing the picture often, which makes the account harder to recognise in a crowded feed of story rings.
Making a profile picture
The flyer editor has no 320 by 320 canvas, so it does not make this size directly. Its square canvas is the Instagram Post at 1080 by 1080, which has the same 1:1 shape and exports at 2160 by 2160. A square design made there can be scaled to 320 by 320 with the image resizer, and the round image corners tool cuts a circle to preview exactly what Instagram will show. The blank 320 by 320 PNG on this page is a starting canvas for any editor.
Questions people ask
Can an Instagram profile picture be a GIF or video?
Instagram profile pictures are still images. An animated file is shown as a single frame, so motion is lost. If movement matters, put it in a pinned Reel or in a Story highlight cover rather than the profile picture itself.
Why does my profile picture look blurry?
Usually the upload was smaller than 320 pixels or was cropped from a small part of a larger photo, so it was enlarged. Start from a square of at least 320 pixels where the subject already fills the frame, and save it as a high quality JPG or a PNG.
Should the profile picture match the other social accounts?
Using the same image across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X helps people confirm they have found the right account. Each platform crops to a circle or a rounded square at slightly different sizes, so a centred design with a margin works everywhere without separate versions.
How do I see the circle crop before uploading?
Cut a circle from the square with a round corners tool set to a full circle, then view it at around 110 pixels wide and again at 40 pixels. If the name or face still reads at the smaller size, the picture will work beside comments as well as on the profile.
Is the profile picture the same as a Story highlight cover?
No. Highlight covers are separate images shown in circles under the bio. They follow the same square in, circle out rule, so a centred icon on a plain background works, and keeping all covers in one style makes the profile look organised.
