Facebook ad size: feed, Stories and Reels in pixels

Meta's ads guide specifies Facebook Feed image ads at 4:5, 1440 by 1800 pixels, at least 600 pixels wide, JPG or PNG up to 30 MB. Stories and Reels placements use 9:16 at 1440 by 2560, with 14 percent at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent each side kept free of text.

A Facebook ad is not one size but one image per placement, and Meta's ads guide is the only place the numbers are kept current. Designing one 4:5 feed image and one 9:16 vertical image covers almost every placement Meta offers.

Feed is 4:5 now

Meta's current feed specification is a 4:5 portrait image at 1440 by 1800 pixels, with a minimum width of 600 pixels and a minimum height of 750 at that ratio. That is taller than the 1.91:1 link image many older guides still list, and it takes more of the screen on a phone. A 1:1 square still runs in the feed, but a 4:5 image gives about a quarter more height for the same width, which is why Meta makes it the recommendation.

Stories and Reels share a frame

Both vertical placements are 9:16. Meta's guide gives 1440 by 2560 pixels for Stories images and Reels videos and asks advertisers to keep roughly 14 percent of the top, 35 percent of the bottom and 6 percent of each side free of text, logos and key elements, because the profile icon, the reply bar and the call to action button are drawn there. On a 1440 by 2560 frame that leaves a central box of about 1267 by 1306 pixels, which is where the offer and the logo belong.

Text on the image

Meta no longer rejects ads for having too much text, but the copy fields carry most of the message: the feed guide lists 50 to 150 characters of primary text and a 27 character headline. Words in the image should be short enough to read on a phone in a second. A good test is to view the ad at 25 percent zoom; if the offer is not clear at that size, it will not be clear in the feed.

Common mistakes

Uploading one landscape image for every placement, which Meta crops awkwardly into Stories. Putting a price in the bottom 35 percent of a vertical image. Using an image below 600 pixels wide in the feed. Repeating the headline word for word in the image. And testing only on a desktop preview, when most Facebook ads are seen on phones.

Making Facebook ad images

The flyer editor makes two of the shapes Meta asks for. Its Facebook Post canvas is 1200 by 630, the 1.91:1 link and post shape, and exports at 2400 by 1260; its Instagram Story canvas is 1080 by 1920, the 9:16 shape, and exports at 2160 by 3840, larger than Meta's 1440 by 2560. Pick either under Format in the generator. The editor has no 4:5 canvas, so it does not make the 1440 by 1800 feed size; the flyer size resizer refits a finished design to 4:5 and shows what the crop removes, and the blank 1440 by 1440 PNG here is a square starting canvas.

Questions people ask

Can one image work for every Facebook placement?

Meta can crop a single image into each placement, but the crops are automatic and often cut text. Two images, a 4:5 or square one for feeds and a 9:16 one for Stories and Reels, give control over what each placement shows, and Meta's ad setup lets each placement use its own image.

How much text should a Facebook ad image carry?

As little as the offer needs. The feed specification gives 50 to 150 characters of primary text and a 27 character headline, so the copy fields carry the detail. Words in the image should read in a second on a phone: a short offer, a price or a date, and nothing that repeats the headline.

What file size can a Facebook ad image be?

Meta's ads guide lists a maximum of 30 MB for feed and Stories images, far above what a 1440 by 1800 or 1440 by 2560 image needs. A JPG at high quality is usually under 1 MB; PNG suits images with sharp text and flat colour.

Do carousel ads use the same size?

Carousel cards in the feed are usually square, and Meta lists their specs separately in the ads guide. Use one shape for every card so the carousel does not jump in height, and keep the same margins so headings line up as people swipe.

How do I check the Stories safe zone?

Overlay Meta's margins on the frame: 14 percent at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent each side. A safe zone checker shades those areas on an uploaded 9:16 image, so any text that falls under them can be moved before the ad goes live.
