LinkedIn banner size: 1584 x 396 pixels
A LinkedIn personal profile banner, the background photo, is 1584 by 396 pixels, a 4:1 ratio, according to the major social media size guides. A company Page uses a different cover: LinkedIn Help gives 1512 by 256 pixels, PNG or JPEG, up to 3 MB. On a profile, the round photo covers the lower left of the banner.
People call two different images the LinkedIn banner. The personal background photo sits behind a person's profile picture; the company cover sits at the top of a Page. They have different shapes, and a design made for one does not fit the other.

Personal banner: 4:1 and the photo in the corner
The personal background is a long 4:1 strip. On desktop the profile picture, a circle, overlaps the lower left of it, and on the phone app the banner is shown shorter with the picture in a similar place. That makes the left third of the banner a poor place for words. Put the message, if there is one, on the right half and in the vertical middle, and treat the left side as background: a texture, a cityscape, a workspace photo.
Company cover: much flatter
LinkedIn's help page for Page images gives the company cover as 1512 by 256 pixels, about 5.9:1, far flatter than the personal banner. The company logo, 400 by 400 recommended and 268 by 268 minimum, sits over its lower left in the same way. Because the strip is so shallow, a single line of text or a clean image works; a slogan plus a photo plus a call to action does not fit. All Page images must be PNG or JPEG and no larger than 3 MB.
What a banner should say
A banner works as a backdrop and, at most, one line. For a person, that line can say what they do or who they help, which supports the headline beneath the photo. For a company, the cover often carries the current campaign or the product in use. Avoid repeating the name, which LinkedIn already prints in large type below the banner, and avoid contact details, which belong in the contact info section where they can be clicked.
Common mistakes
Using a company cover on a personal profile or the reverse, which leaves bands or crops. Placing text in the lower left, under the profile picture. Uploading a photo with fine detail that compresses badly at 4:1. Filling the banner edge to edge with words that become tiny on a phone. And using an image above the file size limit, which fails to upload without a clear explanation.
Making a LinkedIn banner
The flyer editor's LinkedIn canvas is the LinkedIn Post at 1200 by 627, the shape for feed images, not banners, so the editor does not make a 1584 by 396 background or a 1512 by 256 cover. Its widest canvas, the X header at 1500 by 500, is 3:1 and can be refitted to 4:1 with the image resizer and the aspect ratio calculator, which shows what the trim removes. The blank 1584 by 396 PNG on this page is a ready canvas for any editor.
Questions people ask
Why does my LinkedIn banner look different on the phone app?
The app shows the banner at a different height and places the profile picture differently from the desktop site. Text near the edges or in the lower left is the most likely to be covered or cropped, so keep it in the right half and the vertical middle.
Can a LinkedIn banner be animated?
LinkedIn asks for still PNG or JPEG images for Page covers, and personal backgrounds are also still images. Movement belongs in a post or a featured video, which people can play, rather than in the background image that sits behind the profile photo.
Should employees use the company banner?
Many companies give staff a shared background in the personal 1584 by 396 size, so profiles look consistent when prospects browse the team. It has to be made at the personal 4:1 size, not the company cover's 1512 by 256, or it will be cropped.
What file type is best for a LinkedIn banner?
PNG keeps text and flat colour crisp; JPG suits photographs and makes smaller files. LinkedIn's Page image help asks for PNG or JPEG under 3 MB, and a 1584 by 396 JPG at high quality is usually well under that.
How often should a LinkedIn banner change?
There is no rule. People update it when their role or focus changes; companies often change the Page cover for a launch or an event. Keeping the layout fixed and swapping only the image or the single line makes changes quick and keeps the profile recognisable.
