Twitter post size: X image dimensions in pixels

An image in a post on X, formerly Twitter, is commonly made at 1600 by 900 pixels for 16:9, 1080 by 1080 for square or 1080 by 1350 for portrait, the sizes Buffer lists. X's media documentation accepts JPG, PNG, GIF and WEBP images up to 5 MB, animated GIFs up to 15 MB, and aspect ratios between 1:3 and 3:1.

X shows images in the timeline at whatever shape they are uploaded within limits, then crops previews when several images share one post. A single image is forgiving; a set of two to four needs planning.

One image: almost any shape

A single image in an X post is shown at close to its own shape, within limits, so a 16:9 photo stays wide and a 4:5 graphic stays tall. Buffer lists 1600 by 900 for landscape, 1080 by 1080 for square and 1080 by 1350 for portrait. Portrait takes the most room in a phone timeline. X's developer documentation sets the file limit at 5 MB for still images and accepts JPG, PNG, GIF and WEBP.

Two to four images: planned crops

When a post carries several images, X arranges them in a grid and crops each preview to fit its cell, so faces and text near the edges of each image are often cut until someone taps to open it. The safest approach for multi image posts is to keep the subject of each image centred, or to make all images the same shape so the grid is even. A single composite image is an alternative when the layout matters.

Video and GIF limits

X's media documentation gives video limits by account type: on a default account, posts can carry video from half a second to 20 minutes and up to 8 GB, with a frame rate of 60 or less. It recommends 1280 by 720 for landscape and 720 by 1280 for portrait, and accepts aspect ratios between 1:3 and 3:1. Animated GIFs are capped at 15 MB, 1280 by 1080 pixels and 350 frames.

Common mistakes

Posting a tall infographic beyond the shapes X shows in full, so readers see only the middle until they tap. Putting text at the edges of images in a multi image post. Exporting a large PNG photo over 5 MB. Using the header image size, 1500 by 500, for a post, which shows as a thin strip. And relying on alt text being optional: X lets authors add a description to each image, which helps screen reader users and adds context.

Making an X post image

The flyer editor's X canvas is the Twitter Header at 1500 by 500, which is a profile header, not a post image, so the editor does not make the 1600 by 900 post size. Its Facebook Post canvas, 1200 by 630, is close to 16:9 and posts cleanly as a single wide image on X, and its Instagram Post canvas makes 1080 by 1080 squares. The image resizer converts either to 1600 by 900 if an exact 16:9 is wanted, and the blank 1600 by 900 PNG here is a ready canvas.

Questions people ask

Is the X header the same size as a post image?

No. The header is a 3:1 strip at 1500 by 500 at the top of the profile, while post images are usually 16:9, square or 4:5. A header uploaded as a post looks like a thin banner in the timeline, and a post image used as a header is cropped hard.

Can I post a WEBP image on X?

Yes. X's developer media documentation lists WEBP alongside JPG, PNG and GIF for images, with a 5 MB limit. JPG and PNG are still the safest choices when the same file is going to other platforms that may not accept WEBP.

Why is my image cropped in the timeline?

Single images are shown close to their own shape, but multi image posts are cropped into grid cells, and very tall or very wide images are trimmed in previews. Tapping the image shows it in full. Keep the subject centred so the preview still makes sense.

How long can a video on X be?

According to X's developer documentation, a default account can post video from half a second up to 20 minutes and 8 GB, and Premium or verified accounts up to 125 minutes and 16 GB. Short clips still perform better in a fast timeline.

Should I add alt text to X images?

Yes. X lets the author add a description to each image, which screen readers announce. It costs a few seconds and makes charts, screenshots and text heavy graphics usable for people who cannot see them, and it helps anyone on a slow connection.
