Threads post size: image dimensions in pixels
Threads, Meta's text first app, accepts images in several shapes. Sprout Social lists posts at 1080 by 1080 square or 1440 by 1800 portrait with an 8 MB limit; Hootsuite recommends 1440 by 1920; Buffer says posts can be any size. Meta's launch note set posts at 500 characters with videos up to 5 minutes.
Threads publishes far fewer specifications than Instagram, and the size guides disagree, so the useful answer is a shape that every guide accepts. Portrait 4:5 or square, at 1080 pixels wide or more, is the common ground.

Why the guides disagree
Threads launched as a companion to Instagram and accepts a wide range of image shapes, but Meta has not published a sizing page for it the way it does for Instagram ads. The guides therefore describe what they observed: Sprout Social gives square and 4:5 portrait sizes, Hootsuite recommends 1440 by 1920, a 3:4 shape, and Buffer says any size works. All three agree that images up to about 8 MB upload, and none of them suggests going below 1080 pixels wide.
A shape that works everywhere
A 4:5 portrait image at 1080 by 1350 or 1440 by 1800 is the overlap: it is listed by Sprout Social, it is close to Hootsuite's 3:4, and it is the shape Instagram's feed uses, so one file serves both apps. A square 1080 by 1080 is the second safe choice and also posts cleanly on LinkedIn, Facebook and X. Very tall images, such as a 9:16 Story frame, are shown cropped in the Threads feed until opened.
Text first, image second
Threads posts carry up to 500 characters, according to Meta's launch note, so the image does not have to explain everything. A photo, a chart or a quote card that adds to the text works better than an image that repeats it. When several images are attached to one post, giving them the same shape keeps the set even and avoids one image being trimmed to match another.
Common mistakes
Posting a Story sized 9:16 image and losing the top and bottom in the feed. Reusing a landscape link image that shows small beside text. Uploading files above 8 MB. Mixing shapes in a multi image post. Writing long paragraphs into an image when the post itself allows 500 characters of searchable text. And assuming Threads uses the same profile picture as Instagram without checking it, since the guides even disagree on its size.
Making a Threads image
The flyer editor's Instagram Post canvas, 1080 by 1080, is a square that Threads shows in full, so the editor makes the square shape directly: choose Instagram Post under Format and export a PNG or JPG at 2160 by 2160. It has no 4:5 canvas, so for a 1440 by 1800 portrait the flyer size resizer refits the square design and shows what the crop removes. The blank 1080 by 1350 PNG on this page is a 4:5 starting canvas.
Questions people ask
Can Threads posts include videos?
Yes. Meta's launch note says Threads posts can include links, photos and videos up to 5 minutes long. A vertical or square video suits the feed best, and captions help, since many people scroll with the sound off. Keep the first seconds strong, because the feed moves quickly.
Does Threads crop images?
Images are shown close to their own shape within limits, but very tall images are trimmed in the feed until someone opens them. Keeping to square or 4:5 avoids unexpected crops, keeps text near the edges visible, and makes multi image posts line up neatly.
Can one image serve Threads and Instagram?
Yes, if it is square or 4:5. Those shapes are listed for Threads by Sprout Social and are the Instagram feed shapes, so an image at 1080 by 1080 or 1080 by 1350 can be posted to both without a separate export. Check the text in the image reads at phone size, since both apps are used mostly on phones.
What is the best Threads image size for text graphics?
A square 1080 by 1080 or a 4:5 portrait at 1080 by 1350 gives enough room for a short quote or a statistic at a size that reads on a phone. Keep text large and centred, and leave a margin so nothing touches the edges.
Is Threads the same size as Instagram?
The shapes overlap, which is why square and 4:5 images work on both. Instagram publishes detailed ad specifications through Meta's ads guide, while Threads has fewer published numbers, so designing to Instagram's feed shapes is the practical way to cover both apps.
