Discord banner size: profile and server banners in pixels

A Discord server banner is a 16:9 image: Snappa gives 960 by 540 pixels and Linearity 1920 by 1080, and it needs a boosted server. A profile banner is a Nitro perk at about 600 by 240, or 680 by 240 for a per server profile. Snappa lists PNG, JPG or GIF under 10 MB.

Discord has two banners: one at the top of a server's channel list, unlocked by boosting, and one across the top of a member's profile, unlocked by Nitro. Neither size is published in plain text by Discord, so the guides are the working reference.

Server banner: 16:9, shown small

The server banner sits at the top of the channel list on the left of the app, above the channel names. The guides agree it is 16:9 and differ on resolution: Snappa says Discord recommends 960 by 540, Linearity gives 1920 by 1080. Both are the same shape, so a 1920 by 1080 file scaled down to 960 by 540 loses nothing visible. In the channel list the banner is shown narrow and short, so only a bold name or a single image survives.

Profile banners need Nitro

Discord's own Nitro page lists a profile banner among the paid perks, and Linearity gives 600 by 240 for the main profile and 680 by 240 for a per server profile. The profile picture sits over the lower left of the banner, so keep the left side quiet and place any words toward the right. Because these banners appear in a pop up card, they are viewed at small size and benefit from simple shapes and strong colour.

Boosts and animated banners

Server banners and invite backgrounds are unlocked by Server Boosts, according to Linearity, and Snappa notes that animated GIFs can be used. An animated banner draws the eye in a busy channel list, but it should loop smoothly and stay legible on its first frame, which is what shows in some views. Keep animated files well under the 10 MB limit so they load quickly on phones.

Common mistakes

Uploading a wide banner made for another platform, which Discord crops from the centre and cuts off edge text. Placing a long description in the banner when the channel list shows it tiny. Using a profile banner without checking where the avatar overlaps. Exporting a huge animated GIF that loads slowly. And designing at one size when the guides disagree, rather than at 16:9 and testing in the app.

Making a Discord banner

The flyer editor has no 960 by 540 or profile banner canvas, so it does not make these sizes directly. Its Facebook Post canvas, 1200 by 630, is close to 16:9 and can be refitted to 960 by 540 or 1920 by 1080 with the image resizer, and the aspect ratio calculator shows what the small trim removes. The blank 960 by 540 PNG on this page is a ready 16:9 canvas for any editor.

Questions people ask

Why is my Discord server banner option greyed out?

Server banners are a boosted server feature, according to Linearity's guide, so the upload option is locked until the server has enough Server Boosts. Members boost a server from its menu; once the required level is reached, the banner setting becomes available in server settings.

Can a Discord profile banner be a GIF?

Profile banners are a Nitro perk, and guides describe animated options for Nitro members. A still image is the safe default and keeps the file small. If animation is used, check that the first frame reads well, since it may be all some viewers see.

What is the Discord server icon size?

Linearity lists the server icon at 512 by 512 pixels, uploaded square and shown as a circle. Keep the main shape in the centre with a margin, since the corners are cut away, and make sure it reads at the small size used in the server list.

Does Discord crop banners?

Guides say Discord crops images that do not match the expected ratio and crops from the centre. Uploading a true 16:9 server banner avoids surprises, and keeping text in the middle protects it if the app shows a narrower slice on some screens.

Can the same image be a Discord and a Twitch banner?

Not without changes. A Discord server banner is 16:9 while a Twitch profile banner is 5:2, so one of them would be cropped heavily. The Twitch offline banner is 16:9 at 1920 by 1080, though, so that one can share artwork with a Discord server banner.
