Google display ad sizes: the top banner sizes in pixels

Google Ads lists 300 by 250, 336 by 280, 728 by 90, 970 by 90, 160 by 600, 300 by 600 and 320 by 50 as recommended sizes for uploaded display ads. Files must be JPG, PNG or non animated GIF, no larger than 150 KB. Responsive image ads instead take 1.91:1, 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16 images up to 5 MB.

Display advertising still runs on a handful of fixed banner sizes that publishers build their pages around. Google's help page names the ones worth making, and a small set covers most of the inventory.

Uploaded banners and responsive ads

Google offers two ways to run image ads on its display network. An uploaded display ad is a finished banner at one exact size, which Google places only where that size fits. A responsive ad is built by Google from separate images, logos and headlines that it arranges to fit whatever space is free. Uploaded banners give full control over layout; responsive ads reach more placements with less design work, but the layout is Google's.

Which sizes to make first

Google's help page lists seven recommended uploaded sizes. In practice, 300 by 250 and 336 by 280 rectangles sit inside articles, 728 by 90 and 970 by 90 leaderboards sit across the top of desktop pages, 160 by 600 and 300 by 600 run down the side, and 320 by 50 is the phone banner. If budget allows only three, the 300 by 250 rectangle, the 728 by 90 leaderboard and the 320 by 50 mobile banner cover desktop and phone placements.

The 150 KB budget

Every uploaded display ad must be 150 KB or smaller, and animation is not supported in the current spec. That limit shapes the design: flat colour, a single compressed photo and short text in a web font style compress well, while gradients, photo collages and fine detail do not. Export as PNG for flat graphics and JPG for photo led banners, then check the file size before upload; an image compressor shows the quality loss at each setting.

Common mistakes

Shrinking one design into every size, which makes the 320 by 50 banner unreadable. Packing a leaderboard with a headline, a photo, a logo and a button when it is only 90 pixels tall. Exceeding 150 KB with a large PNG photo. Uploading an animated GIF the current spec does not accept. And forgetting a clear call to action: a banner is a doorway to a landing page, not a place to explain the offer.

Making display ads

The flyer editor's canvases are social and print sizes, so it does not make 300 by 250, 728 by 90 or any other display banner directly. For responsive ads, though, its Facebook Post canvas at 1200 by 630 is the 1.91:1 landscape shape Google asks for, and its Instagram Post canvas at 1080 by 1080 and Instagram Story canvas at 1080 by 1920 match the square and 9:16 images. Fixed banners can be cut from a larger design with the image resizer and image cropper, starting from the blank 300 by 250 PNG on this page.

Questions people ask

What is the most common Google display ad size?

The 300 by 250 medium rectangle is the most widely supported, because it fits inside article text on desktop and phone. Google's help page also highlights the 336 by 280 rectangle, the 728 by 90 leaderboard and the 300 by 600 half page as common placements.

Can Google display ads be animated?

Google's current image ad specification for uploaded display ads accepts JPG, PNG and non animated GIF and says animation is not supported. Movement belongs in video campaigns instead, or the banner can use strong contrast and a clear button to draw attention without motion.

Why is my display ad rejected for file size?

Uploaded display ads have a 150 KB limit. A photo heavy banner saved as PNG often exceeds it. Save photo banners as JPG at a moderate quality, reduce the number of colours in flat graphics, and check the final size before uploading again.

Do I need every display ad size?

No. Each size only shows where a publisher has that slot, so more sizes reach more placements, but three to four sizes covering desktop and mobile capture most of it. Responsive ads fill the gaps by adapting to whatever space a page offers.

What images does a responsive display ad need?

Google asks for a 1.91:1 landscape image, recommended at 1200 by 628, and a 1:1 square at 1200 by 1200, with 4:5 and 9:16 options. A square logo is also recommended. Each image may be up to 5 MB, and the logo up to 150 KB.
