Twitch banner size: 1200 x 480 pixels
A Twitch profile banner is 1200 by 480 pixels, a 5:2 ratio, and the offline video player banner is 1920 by 1080, a 16:9 frame, according to VEED, Streamlabs and Onlypult. Both should be JPEG or PNG, with GIF also listed, and kept under 10 MB. The profile picture is a separate square.
Twitch uses two banners that people often mix up: one along the top of the channel's About page and one that fills the video player when the channel is offline. They have different shapes, and the offline one is seen far more.

Profile banner: wide and shallow
The profile banner runs along the top of the channel page above the About section. At 1200 by 480 it is a 5:2 strip, and on wide monitors it is stretched across the page, so the edges are cropped or extended differently by screen. Treat it as a backdrop with the channel name or schedule kept in the middle third, and avoid placing anything important near the left, where the profile picture and name are drawn.
Offline banner: the one people see
When a channel is not live, the video player shows the offline banner at 1920 by 1080, the same 16:9 frame as the stream. For many visitors that is the first image they see, so it should say when the next stream is and what it is about. Because it fills the player, it has room for a schedule, social handles and a short line about the channel, in type large enough to read on a phone.
File weight and format
All three guides advise staying under 10 MB, and JPEG and PNG are the safe formats; Onlypult also lists GIF. A 1920 by 1080 PNG with photographs can approach that limit, while a JPEG at high quality is usually a few hundred kilobytes. Panels, the small images under the player that link to rules, schedules or donation pages, are 320 by 160 and should share one style so the section looks organised.
Common mistakes
Uploading the 16:9 offline image as the profile banner, which gets cropped to a strip. Putting the schedule in the corners of the profile banner. Using thin text on a busy game screenshot. Forgetting to update the offline banner when the schedule changes, so it promises a stream that will not happen. And designing panels at different sizes, which makes the column under the player ragged.
Making Twitch banners
The flyer editor has no 1200 by 480 or offline banner canvas, so it does not make these sizes directly. Its X header canvas, 1500 by 500 at 3:1, is the closest wide shape and can be refitted to 5:2 with the image resizer, while its Facebook Post canvas, 1200 by 630, is near 16:9 for an offline banner. The aspect ratio calculator shows what each crop removes, and the blank 1200 by 480 PNG here is a ready canvas.
Questions people ask
Is the Twitch offline banner the same as a stream thumbnail?
No. The offline banner fills the player while the channel is offline. A live stream's thumbnail in browse pages is generated from the stream itself. The offline banner is the place for a schedule and a short description, since visitors see it whenever no stream is running.
Why does my Twitch profile banner look stretched?
Wide monitors show the banner across a broader area than 1200 pixels, so the image may be scaled or cropped at the edges. Keep text in the middle third and use a background that still looks fine when its sides are cut.
What size should Twitch panels be?
Guides from Streamlabs and VEED list panels at 320 by 160 pixels, a 2:1 shape. Making every panel the same size, with the same font and colours, keeps the area under the player tidy and easy to scan for rules, schedules and links.
Can a Twitch banner be animated?
Onlypult lists GIF among accepted formats for banners, but a still image is the safe default and loads faster. Movement is better shown in the stream itself or in clips, which visitors can play from the channel page without slowing it down.
What should an offline banner say?
When the next stream is, with a time zone, what the channel streams, and where to follow for updates. A face or a recognisable mark helps returning viewers know they are in the right place. Avoid long lists of rules, which belong in a panel.
