Pinterest pin size: 1000 x 1500 pixels
A standard Pinterest pin is 1000 by 1500 pixels, a 2:3 portrait ratio. Pinterest accepts PNG or JPEG images up to 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in the app, and warns that a pin taller than 2:3 may be cut off in people's feeds.
Pinterest is a vertical feed, so the pin that fills the most of a column without being trimmed wins the space. That shape is 2:3, and almost every sizing mistake on the platform comes from ignoring it.

Why 2:3 and not taller
Pinterest lays pins out in columns of equal width, so the only thing a designer controls is height. A 2:3 pin at 1000 by 1500 pixels takes a generous slice of the column on a phone and on a desktop grid, and Pinterest's own specification page names that ratio as the recommendation. Older advice favoured very long infographic pins because they used to show at full length. Pinterest now says a pin with a ratio greater than 2:3 might get cut off, so the bottom of a long pin, which is usually where the call to action sits, can simply vanish. If a design needs more height, split it across a carousel instead.
Width matters less than the ratio
The 1000 pixel width is a recommendation rather than a hard floor. A pin uploaded at 600 by 900 has the same shape and lays out the same way, but it looks soft on a large screen, and a pin uploaded at 2000 by 3000 is resized down with no gain. Keeping the 1000 by 1500 canvas gives a sharp result at a modest file size, well under the 20 MB desktop limit. Fine text is the first thing to suffer on a small pin, so set the smallest line at a size that reads on a phone held at arm's length, roughly the size of the pin's title text in the app.
Video pins and carousels use other shapes
A video pin is not held to 2:3. Pinterest accepts anything from 1.91:1 wide to 1:2 tall and recommends square or vertical shapes such as 4:5 and 9:16, with files up to 2 GB and a running time between 4 seconds and 15 minutes. A static carousel takes 2 to 5 images at 1:1 or 2:3, and every card should share one ratio so the set does not jump in height as people swipe. These limits come from Pinterest's ad specification page, which is also where the organic limits are kept, so check it again before a campaign.
Common mistakes
Uploading a landscape photo as a pin is the most common one; it shows as a short strip and loses the column. The second is stacking text to the very bottom edge of a long pin, which is the part Pinterest trims. The third is using a tiny logo in a corner where the save button and the overflow menu are drawn. The fourth is exporting a JPEG at low quality, which smears flat colour and lettering. Use PNG for graphics with type and JPEG for photographs, and check the finished file with an image size checker before uploading a batch.
Making a pin at this size
The flyer editor has no 2:3 canvas, so it cannot make a 1000 by 1500 pin directly. Its tallest social canvas is the Instagram Story at 1080 by 1920, which is 9:16 and would be trimmed on Pinterest. A practical route is to design at Instagram Post or Story size, export a PNG, and use the image resizer or the image cropper to cut a 2:3 frame from it, or to start from the blank 1000 by 1500 PNG linked on this page in any editor that opens an image.
Questions people ask
Can a Pinterest pin be square?
Yes. Square images upload and display, and square is one of the shapes Pinterest recommends for video pins and allows for static carousels. A square pin simply takes less height in the column than a 2:3 pin, so it competes for attention with less space. It suits product shots that are already square, such as a catalogue photo.
Does Pinterest compress uploaded pins?
Pinterest resizes images for display, so a very large upload is not shown at full resolution and gains nothing. Starting from 1000 by 1500 pixels and saving text heavy graphics as PNG keeps lettering crisp after resizing. Photographs can be JPEG at a high quality setting, which keeps the file small without visible blocking.
What size is a Pinterest profile picture or board cover?
Pinterest's product specification page covers pins, video pins and carousels, not profile images. Third party guides list the profile picture at 165 by 165 pixels and a cover at 800 by 450, but those figures are not published on the specification page checked, so treat them as a starting point and preview the result after uploading.
Can I put a link in the pin image itself?
Text in the image is only a picture, so it cannot be clicked. The destination link is set in the pin's own link field when it is created. Printing a short web address in the image still helps people remember where the pin leads, especially when they save it and come back to it later.
Is 1000 x 1500 the same as 1080 x 1620?
Both are exactly 2:3, so they lay out identically in the feed. 1080 by 1620 is slightly larger and gives a little more sharpness on high density screens, at a slightly larger file. Either is fine; the ratio is the part that matters, and anything taller than 2:3 risks being cut off.
