A business plan for a lender, an investor or a partner should run about 8 to 10 pages, enough for a summary, the business, products and pricing, the market, competition, marketing, operations, financials, funding and risks. A plan for one function, such as marketing, sales or a launch, needs about 5. The 23 finished plans measured on this site have a median of 5 pages and 1,335 words; the full business plan example is 9.

What was measured

The set is the 23 plan documents in the document example library on this site, measured on 21 October 2026: the business plan example and the 22 plans in the business plans and strategies group, from a two page lesson plan to a nine page strategic plan. Each was rendered as A4 pages, and a script counted the pages (a cover counts as a page), the words on them and the document’s main section groups.

These are finished examples for fictional Australian businesses and organisations. They show how long a complete, readable plan of each kind is, not how long the plans lenders accept are.

The business plan itself

The business plan example is 9 pages and about 2,100 words with a cover and contents page, then ten numbered sections: an executive summary, the business, products and pricing, the market, competition, marketing, operations, financials, funding, and risks, followed by the owner and an appendix. That covers every section the US Small Business Administration lists for a traditional plan: the executive summary, company description, market analysis, organisation and management, the product or service line, marketing and sales, the funding request and financial projections.

The SBA adds that a traditional plan can be dozens of pages, while a lean plan is typically one page. A small business usually needs something between the two: everything a lender will ask about, said once.

Whole of business plans run longest

The longest plans are the ones that cover the whole organisation. The strategic plan and the business continuity plan are 9 pages each, the operational plan 8. They are also the wordiest, at 2,600 to 2,700 words, because they set goals, owners and measures for every part of the business.

Plans for one function settle at five pages

Ten of the 23 plans are exactly 5 pages: stakeholder engagement, succession, content, quality management, implementation, exit strategy, procurement, training, fundraising and growth. Their words vary more than their pages, from about 800 on the growth plan to about 1,650 on the stakeholder engagement plan, because some lean on tables and timelines. The marketing plan and the event plan run to 7, the launch, sales and IT disaster recovery plans to 6, and the communication plan to 4.

The short end is plans written for one person or one lesson: a personal development plan and a lesson plan at 2 pages, a teaching unit plan at 3. They are the three without a cover.

How long yours should be

  1. For a lender, investor or partner: 8 to 10 pages with a cover, contents and a one page summary.
  2. For one function such as marketing, sales or a launch: about 5 pages.
  3. For continuity or disaster recovery: as long as the procedures need, often 6 to 9 pages, because the reader will follow it in a crisis.
  4. For one person or one class: 2 or 3 pages, no cover.
  5. Put detail in an appendix: full financial statements, CVs and quotes.

business.gov.au’s guidance on developing a business plan adds the most useful rule: summarise the main points in as few words as possible, and review the plan regularly. How to write a business plan covers each section, and the page on a business case against a business plan explains which document a decision needs. The post on cover pages shows when a cover earns its page.

In the product

The document generator classifies every document before writing it, and a document of six or more pages is planned section by section rather than written in one pass. A cover is only added to a document a reader would expect one on, and never under three pages, and long documents can carry a contents block whose titles match the headings. The long document generator page shows how a long plan is built, and the guide to creating a document with AI covers the brief.

A finished example

A business plan is a set of numbers with enough words to make them believable, and most templates get that ratio backwards. This one is a plan for a 40 seat cafe with the ask on page one, the market in figures, the competitors in a table, a three year profit and loss, the start up costs and a cash flow chart that shows the month the overdraft peaks.

Questions people ask

How many pages should a business plan be for a bank loan?

Long enough to cover the business, the market, the owner, the numbers and the risks, which in this set takes 9 pages with a cover and contents. Lenders read the summary and the financials first, so put the loan amount, its purpose and how it is repaid on page one of the summary and in the funding section.

What is a one page business plan?

A summary of the plan on a single page: what the business sells, to whom, how it reaches them, the key numbers and the next goals. The US Small Business Administration describes a lean startup plan as typically one page. It is useful for testing an idea or briefing a team, and it does not replace the full plan a lender asks for.

Is a 30 page business plan too long?

For a small business, usually. The SBA notes a traditional plan can run to dozens of pages, but a reader with a decision to make wants the summary, the market, the numbers and the risks, not padding. If a section runs long, move detail such as full financial statements, CVs or quotes from suppliers into an appendix.

How long should the executive summary be?

One page or less. business.gov.au advises summarising the main points of the plan in as few words as possible. In the business plan example here, the executive summary is the first numbered section, ahead of the business, the products and the market, so a reader can stop there and still know what is being asked.

How often should a business plan be updated?

At least once a year, and whenever something material changes: a new product, a lost customer, a loan application. business.gov.au tells businesses to review and update the plan regularly. A plan that still describes last year's prices and staff misleads the person reading it, including you.
