A Big Cartel alternative for artists and makers

Big Cartel is a simple store platform for artists and small businesses: templates, physical and digital products, shipping labels, in person sales from a phone, discounts, product drops and print on demand. OneCraft Sites puts a store inside an AI written website, paid through Stripe Checkout into your own account.

The short verdict

Big Cartel suits an artist or band that wants a focused shop with print on demand, shipping labels, in person sales from a phone and many payment methods including PayPal. OneCraft suits a maker who wants a full website, story, commissions and enquiries, with a store inside it paid through their own Stripe account.

Where Big Cartel is better

Where OneCraft is different

Shop first or site first

Big Cartel is a storefront with a few pages. OneCraft is a website with a store in it. For an artist whose income is mostly prints, a storefront is enough. For one who also takes commissions, runs workshops or plays shows, a website that explains all of it, with the shop as one part, often works better.

Moving your products

Big Cartel does not appear in the OneCraft import list, but its products can come across through a plain CSV with title, price, options and stock columns, which the import reads with a dry run first. Re-upload photos and set downloads for digital products.

Fees to weigh

Big Cartel plans are on its pricing page. OneCraft adds a platform fee per payment of 2 percent on Starter, 1 percent on Pro and 0.5 percent on Pro+, plus Stripe fees, to a monthly plan. Compare at your real monthly sales.

Who should stay with Big Cartel

Stay with Big Cartel if you rely on PayPal or Afterpay, print on demand, label printing or selling at markets from your phone. Move if you want a full website around your shop and are happy with Stripe Checkout.

Questions people ask

Can buyers pay with PayPal on OneCraft?

No. Checkout is Stripe Checkout only, which takes cards and the wallets Stripe offers in the buyer region. If many of your buyers use PayPal or Afterpay, that is a strong reason to stay with a platform that supports them.

Can I sell digital downloads on OneCraft like on Big Cartel?

Yes on a paid plan. Download products carry a file of up to 500 MB per variant, buyers get download buttons on screen and by email, and each item allows 5 downloads within 7 days of payment. Files are stored privately and never published with the site pages.

Does OneCraft do print on demand?

No. There is no print on demand connection. You can list printed items you make or order yourself, and set stock or leave it untracked if you produce to order, but printing, packing and posting stay with you, and so does choosing the carrier and buying postage.

Can I schedule a product drop?

There is no scheduled release. Prepare products as drafts and switch them to active at drop time; on a published site the catalogue updates within about half a minute. Announce the time in a banner and a newsletter so buyers come back at the right moment.

Is there an app for managing my shop?

The store screens work in a phone browser, and the sites admin installs to your home screen as a web app with push notifications for new orders, so you can mark orders sent, add tracking and answer messages from your phone.
