A Gumroad alternative: sell downloads from your own website

Gumroad takes 10% plus 50 cents on direct sales and 30% on sales through its Discover marketplace, with no monthly fee, and acts as merchant of record for sales tax. OneCraft writes your own store website that sells downloads through your own Stripe account, for a monthly plan and a 0.5% to 2% platform fee.

The short verdict

Gumroad is the better pick for a creator who wants to start selling today with no monthly fee, have sales tax handled worldwide as merchant of record, and reach buyers through its Discover marketplace. OneCraft suits a creator whose sales have grown enough that a 10% cut costs more than a monthly plan, and who wants the store on their own website with buyers and downloads in their own database.

Where Gumroad is better

Where OneCraft is different

Where the break even sits

On $1,000 of direct sales in a month, Gumroad's fee is $100 plus 50 cents a sale. On OneCraft Pro the plan is $25 and the platform fee 1%, or $10, with Stripe's card fees on top on both routes. At low volumes Gumroad's no monthly fee model is cheaper; as sales grow, a flat plan and a small platform fee usually cost less. Run your own numbers with a typical month.

Merchant of record matters

Gumroad became merchant of record on 1 January 2025, so it collects and remits sales tax worldwide and its name is on the sale. On OneCraft each sale is a direct charge on your own connected Stripe account, so the sale and its tax obligations are yours, as they would be on any shop you run. Creators selling to many countries should check their tax position before moving.

What the agent builds

From a brief listing your products, the agent writes product pages, a checkout through Stripe Checkout, buyer accounts with email or Google sign in, and a downloads page that reads files from the private bucket. A webhook marks each order paid, and an admin area lists orders for you.

Who should stay with Gumroad

Stay with Gumroad if you are starting out, sell little each month, or want tax handled for you worldwide. Move if your monthly sales make a 10% fee larger than a plan, and you want the store, the buyers and their downloads on your own website.

Questions people ask

Can I sell physical products too?

The guides include a catalog, orders and delivery that the agent writes into the site's own database, so a site can sell physical goods as well as downloads. Gumroad's pricing page says physical goods are outside what it allows. Stock levels can be tracked with the inventory guide.

Can buyers download a file again later?

Yes, when the agent builds buyer accounts and a downloads page. The file sits in the site's private bucket and the access rule checks that the signed in buyer has a paid order before the file is served. Downloads therefore keep working without a separate delivery service.

How large can a download be?

Files in the site's private bucket can be up to 25 MB each, and public files up to 10 MB. Larger products, such as video courses, need hosting elsewhere with the link delivered after purchase. Public images and previews can be up to 10 MB each.

Can I offer a pay what you want price?

Prices are read from the site's database, never from the browser, so a name your price flow needs the agent to build rules for the allowed amounts. Ask for it in chat and test the checkout before publishing. Test it with a small amount before launch.

Do I need a Stripe account?

Yes. You connect Stripe once in account Settings, Payments, on a paid plan. Stripe then pays sales out to your own bank account on its normal schedule, and refunds are issued from your Stripe dashboard. OneCraft never holds the money; it is paid to your connected account.
