Employee of the Month, October 2026, Greenway Fresh Market

Employee of the month certificate that states the reason

An employee of the month certificate names the person, the month and, most importantly, the reason, so colleagues can see what is being rewarded. This example from a supermarket recognises a produce team member who cut the cold chain check to under 20 minutes and produce waste by a third.

Why the reason sentence matters

Workplace research on recognition finds that people value recognition most when it is specific, timely and connected to something they did. An employee of the month certificate that only names the person does half the job: it thanks one employee but teaches nobody anything. A sentence that names the change and the result does both. It tells the winner exactly what was valued and shows everyone else a concrete example of the behaviour the store wants. Write it with the person's manager, who knows what actually happened, and check any figure before it goes on the board.

Running the award well

Decide the criteria at the start of the year, such as customer service, safety, teamwork or improvement, and say how nominations work. Ask colleagues to nominate with a sentence of reason; the best nomination sentences become the certificate wording. Present the certificate at a team meeting or shift huddle so it is seen. Keep a list of past winners and reasons, which helps with fairness and makes the annual award easy to judge.

How to adapt this document

Change the badge, month and name, then rewrite the reason sentence from the nomination. Swap the cards for facts that suit your workplace, such as shift, department or customer comments received. If you do not run peer nominations, replace that card with the length of service or the team. Keep the series footer, updating the count each month, and use the same design all year so the certificates read as one program.

What makes this document work

The reason is a result anyone can see

The sentence says what changed: chilled stock reaches the chillers in under 20 minutes and waste in the section fell by a third. Colleagues reading it on the staff board learn what good looks like, which is the real point of the award.

Peer nomination is shown

Nominated by 5 colleagues sits on a card. An award chosen by the manager alone can look like favouritism; showing that peers put the name forward makes it credible on the shop floor.

It belongs to a series

The footer reads 10 of 12 for 2026, so the award is part of a monthly habit rather than a one off. Staff can see recognition happens every month and plan to be next.

Questions people ask

What should an employee of the month certificate say?

The month, the employee's name and role or team, one sentence on what they did with a result if possible, who nominated them, and the signature of the manager presenting it. The reason is what other staff read, so make it specific: a process improved, a customer helped or a target beaten.

How do you choose an employee of the month fairly?

Publish the criteria, invite nominations from colleagues, and have the manager decide from nominations against those criteria. Rotate attention across teams and shifts so night staff and part timers are not overlooked. Keeping a short record of each month's reason also shows patterns if certain teams never win.

Should employee of the month come with a prize?

Many workplaces add a small reward such as a voucher, a parking spot or a paid hour off. Recognition research suggests the public, specific thanks matters more than the size of the prize. If you do add a reward, keep it the same each month so the award is about the recognition, not the gift.

Can the same person win employee of the month twice?

It is allowed, but winning repeatedly can discourage others. Some workplaces set a rule that a person can win once in twelve months and then become eligible for a separate annual award. Whatever rule you choose, publish it at the start of the year so nobody is surprised.

Where should the certificate be displayed?

On the staff noticeboard or in the break room for the month, then given to the employee to keep. A copy in the personnel file is a good idea, because it can support a later promotion or reference. Display it where staff, not customers, will read the reason.
