10 Years of Service Certificate, Eldermere Shire Council
Years of service certificate for a 10 year milestone
A years of service certificate marks how long a person has worked for an organisation and thanks them for it, with the dates that prove the milestone. This example from a shire council marks ten years for a senior environmental health officer, from 2 November 2016, and names the work she led.

Why name the work, not only the years
Reward specialists describe recognition as most effective when it is meaningful to the person, and a long service certificate can feel impersonal if it only counts years. Adding one sentence about what the person did changes that. For a council officer, leading food safety work through two floods is the kind of thing colleagues remember; putting it on the certificate shows that the organisation remembers too. Ask the person's manager for the sentence, and check it with a colleague who has worked alongside them for years.
Getting the dates right
Take the start date from the personnel record, not from memory, and check for breaks in service, such as a period of leave without pay or a gap between contracts, that your policy might treat differently. If service includes time with a predecessor organisation, such as before an amalgamation, decide how to count it and say so in the sentence. An incorrect date on a service certificate is the one error the recipient will certainly notice.
How to adapt this document
Change the badge, name, role and dates, and set the title to the milestone: Five Years of Service, Twenty Years of Service. Rewrite the contribution sentence for the person. Keep the three cards, because the start and milestone dates are what make the certificate checkable. Change the signatory to your most senior leader and the footer to your awards event. Use one design for every milestone so the certificates form a set across the organisation.
What makes this document work
The dates prove the milestone
Started 2 November 2016 and milestone 2 November 2026 sit beside the figure 10. The certificate can be checked against the personnel record, and the employee sees her exact anniversary rather than a rounded year.
Service is tied to real work
The sentence names her role and one thing she led: the food safety program through two floods. Long service recognition that mentions what someone did, not only how long they stayed, avoids the impression that time served is all that counts.
Signed at the top
The chief executive signs alone. For a ten year milestone, a signature from the most senior person tells the employee the organisation as a whole is thanking her, not just her own team.
Questions people ask
What do you write on a years of service certificate?
The organisation, the number of years, the employee's name and role, the start date and the anniversary date, a sentence on their contribution, and the signature of a senior leader. Some organisations add a line from the employee's manager. Keep it to one page and make the number of years the largest figure after the name.
Which service milestones are usually recognised?
Five, ten, fifteen, twenty and twenty five years are the most common, with some organisations marking every five years after that. Smaller employers often mark one and three years as well. Choose milestones you can keep recognising consistently; a program that lapses after a few years does more harm than having none.
Who should sign a long service certificate?
The most senior person available, such as the chief executive, managing director or mayor, with the employee's manager as a second signatory if you like. A senior signature signals that the whole organisation values the person's loyalty. For very long service, such as 25 years, consider presenting it in person at a formal event.
Is a years of service certificate the same as long service leave?
No. The certificate is recognition. Long service leave, where it exists, is a legal or contractual entitlement to paid leave after a qualifying period, and its rules vary by country, state and agreement. Do not use the certificate to state leave entitlements; confirm those separately in writing.
Should a service award include a gift?
Many organisations pair the certificate with a gift that grows with the milestone, such as a voucher at five years and a larger gift at ten. Check the tax treatment of gifts to employees where you are. The certificate and a few words of thanks at a team gathering are what most people remember.

Employee of the month certificate that states the reason
An employee of the month certificate names the person, the month and, most importantly, the reason, so colleagues can see what is being rewarded. This example from a supermarket recognises a produce team member who cut the cold chain check to under 20 minutes and produce waste by a third.
Training certificate template with course hours and an expiry date
A training certificate records that a person completed a named course on a date, how long it took and when it must be refreshed. This example from a logistics company covers a four hour manual handling course, sets a refresh date two years later and states that it is in house training, not a national qualification.
Scholarship certificate template for a school award
A scholarship certificate names the award, the recipient and why they were chosen, and states its value and the year it covers. This example from a secondary college awards a $2,000 science scholarship for 2027 to a Year 10 student for her river microplastics project and her help in the science club.
