Request to withdraw resignation, Tom Iwasaki to Aldmoor Diagnostics

Resignation withdrawal letter asking to stay on

A resignation can usually be withdrawn only if the employer agrees, so a withdrawal letter asks rather than tells. This one page letter from a laboratory technician asks to stay after the job he resigned for fell through, accepts that the decision belongs to his manager and commits to finishing a validation project.

Aldmoor Diagnostics, Clinical Chemistry

Request to withdraw my resignation

Dear Fiona, on Tuesday 8 September I gave notice of my resignation as a Laboratory Technician, with a last day of Friday 2 October. I am writing to ask whether I may withdraw that resignation and stay in my role.

I understand that once a resignation has been given, the decision to accept a withdrawal is yours, and that you may already have made plans for my position. I will respect whatever you decide.

Why. The role I resigned to take has been withdrawn after the company's funding fell through. I would not have resigned without that offer, and I would rather stay at Aldmoor than look elsewhere.

If you agree
Method validation
Complete and signed off by Friday 30 October
Roster
I will keep the late shifts already planned for October
Terms
My current contract, unchanged

Could you let me have your answer in writing by Friday 25 September, so that either of us can plan? I am happy to talk it through at any time.

Yours sincerely

The heat of the moment exception

Most resignations, once clearly given, stand unless the employer agrees to let them go. Workplace advisory services note one recognised exception: words said in anger or under stress may not amount to a real resignation, and an employer should allow time for the employee to reconsider before treating employment as ended. That exception does not apply here, because the resignation was planned and written. That is why this letter asks politely, gives a reason that is not about the employer, and offers something useful in return.

Situations and likely outcomes

Resigned in anger and withdrawn the next day: usually accepted, and in some systems the employer should accept it. Resigned for another job that fell through, as here, and asked two weeks later: often accepted if the role has not been filled and the employee is valued. Resigned and the replacement already hired: usually refused. Resigned and then received a counter offer from the same employer: that is acceptance of new terms rather than a withdrawal, and should be recorded as a variation. Whatever the outcome, get it in writing with the effect on service.

How to adapt this document

Change the names, role and dates to match your resignation exactly. Keep the acknowledgement paragraph; it is what makes the letter a request rather than a demand. Give your real reason in one sentence, and leave out anything critical of the employer. Replace the card with commitments that matter to your manager, such as a project deadline or a shift pattern. Ask for an answer before your original last day so that both sides can still plan either way.

What makes this document work

It asks, and says the answer is theirs

The second paragraph accepts that once notice is given, a withdrawal is the employer's decision, and that plans may already be in motion. A manager who feels respected is more likely to say yes than one presented with a demand.

The reason is honest and short

One sentence explains the new role was withdrawn when the company's funding fell through, and that he would not have resigned otherwise. Being plain about it avoids any suggestion that the resignation was a tactic for more money.

The offer is concrete

A card lists what happens if the employer agrees: the method validation signed off by 30 October, the October late shifts kept, and the contract unchanged. A reply date of 25 September leaves a week before the original last day.

Questions people ask

Can I withdraw my resignation?

Usually only if your employer agrees. A clear resignation, once given, generally cannot be taken back on your own. The exception in some systems is a resignation given in the heat of the moment, which an employer should allow time to reconsider. Ask as soon as you know you want to stay, in writing, and accept that the answer may be no.

Does my employer have to accept a resignation withdrawal?

No. The employer may already have hired a replacement, reorganised the team or simply prefer to let the resignation stand. If it refuses, your employment ends on the original date. If it agrees, ask for confirmation in writing that your employment continues on the same terms with no break in service.

How quickly should I withdraw my resignation?

As soon as possible, ideally within days of resigning and well before your last day. The longer you wait, the more likely the employer has advertised the role or made an offer. This letter goes out about two weeks after the resignation and asks for an answer a week before the last day.

Will withdrawing my resignation affect my job later?

It can affect trust, which is why the tone of the letter matters. A short, honest reason and a practical commitment, such as finishing a project, help. Most managers would rather keep a good employee than recruit, but some will wonder if you will leave again. Doing the job well after returning is the best answer.

What if I resigned in the heat of the moment?

If you resigned during an argument or under pressure, say so and withdraw quickly, ideally the same or next day. Employment tribunals and advisory services recognise that words spoken in anger may not be a real resignation, and employers are encouraged to allow a cooling off period. Put the withdrawal in writing even if you also say it in person.
