What is a collection in ecommerce?
In ecommerce, a collection is a named group of products shown together on its own page, such as Mugs, New arrivals or Gifts under $50. A product can belong to several collections, and collections help buyers browse, let you feature products on the home page, and give search engines pages for each group.
Collections are how a shop turns a flat list of products into something people can browse. They are flexible: the same mug can sit in Mugs, Speckled glaze and Gifts at once.

Collections versus categories
A category system usually puts each product in one place in a tree, like a department store floor plan. Collections are looser: overlapping groups chosen for how people shop. Many small stores find collections easier, because a gift collection can cut across every category.
Kinds of collection
By type, such as Mugs and Bowls; by attribute, such as a glaze or material; by occasion, such as Gifts or Wedding registry; by status, such as New arrivals or Sale; and by curation, such as Staff picks. Start with type collections and add others when they help buyers.
Collections and search
Each collection usually has its own page and address, which can rank for searches like handmade ceramic mugs. A collection page with a short, useful description and well named products gives search engines more to understand than a bare grid.
Common mistakes
Creating many collections with one or two products each, leaving collections empty after products sell out, writing no description, and naming collections in internal terms buyers would not use, such as SS26 drop 2.
Where it shows up in OneCraft
The store has Collections with a title, an optional description and image, and the products in it, in product order. A published store gets a page at /collections/ followed by the handle for every collection with products, and product sections can show all products or one collection. CSV imports create collections named in the file.
Questions people ask
How many collections should a small store have?
Enough that each holds a meaningful group, often four to eight for a store of a few dozen products. Every collection should have at least a handful of products. Too many thin collections make browsing harder and create weak pages for search engines.
Can a product be in more than one collection?
Yes, and that is the point of collections. A mug can be in Mugs, Speckled glaze and Gifts under $50 at once. Changing the product updates it everywhere it appears, so there is only one record to maintain for price, stock and photos.
Do collections need descriptions?
A short description helps both buyers and search engines understand the group, such as what makes these mugs different and how to care for them. Two or three sentences are enough. Avoid stuffing keywords; write what a shop assistant would say.
What is the difference between a collection and a tag?
Tags are labels on products used for filtering or internal organisation, often invisible to buyers. Collections are buyer facing groups with their own page. Some platforms build automatic collections from tags; others, like many small store builders, use hand picked collections.
Should sold out products stay in a collection?
It depends. Keeping popular sold out items visible can signal demand and capture interest if restocking soon. If an item will not return, archive it so collections show only what buyers can actually order, which keeps the pages useful and honest.
