A Thunkable alternative: Expo apps written from a brief

Thunkable is a no code app builder where you lay out screens yourself, with plans from free to $189 a month and a cap on live published apps below Advanced. OneCraft takes the other route: you describe the app and an AI agent writes a whole Expo app, with its own database when it needs one, from $8 a month.

The short verdict

Thunkable is the better pick for someone who wants to place every component on each screen by hand, test live on a phone straight away and keep a Thunkable subscription running for as long as the app is live. OneCraft suits an owner who would rather describe the business and have an agent write a full Expo app, with sign in and a database, then download the code and submit it from their own store accounts.

Where Thunkable is better

Where OneCraft is different

Two ways to make an app

Thunkable is a canvas: you drag components onto screens, set their properties and wire up behaviour without code. That suits people who know exactly what each screen should look like. OneCraft starts from a written brief, such as a gym that wants a timetable, bookings and a members area. The agent turns that into a plan of screens and tabs, then writes the app as TypeScript with Expo Router. You change it by asking, for example to add a waitlist to full classes, and every change is built before it is kept.

What happens to a live app

Thunkable's pricing page says published apps become unavailable to end users if the subscription expires, outside its Pro and Business plans. On OneCraft the app is code you can download at any time, and store builds run through Expo with your own Apple key for iPhone. The store listing lives in your own App Store and Google Play accounts, so the app is not tied to the builder's plan once it is submitted.

Counting the cost

Thunkable's Builder plan is $37 a month billed yearly for one live published app. OneCraft's Starter plan is $8 a month with 500 credits; a measured whole app generation used 55 to 72 credits, and each Expo test or store build adds 5 credits. Apple's developer programme costs 99 USD a year and Google Play 25 USD once on either route.

Who should stay with Thunkable

Stay with Thunkable if you enjoy designing screens by hand, want to test on your phone without paying for builds, or teach app making in a classroom. Move if you want a business app written for you in React Native with Expo, a database that is yours, and code you can hand to a developer later.

Questions people ask

Can I move a Thunkable project into OneCraft?

There is no importer. You describe the app again in the generator, and you can base a new app on one of your OneCraft websites or on a web address so the agent picks up colours, fonts and content. The screens are rewritten as Expo code rather than converted component by component.

Does OneCraft write a native app or a web wrapper?

It writes an Expo app with Expo Router and React Native, which compiles to native iPhone and Android apps through Expo's build service. The preview in the builder runs a web export of the same code so you can click through it before paying for a build.

Do I need a Mac to get an iPhone build?

No. Builds run in Expo's cloud on OneCraft's Expo organisation unless you connect your own Expo token. An iPhone build does need your Apple developer key, and Apple's developer programme costs 99 USD a year whichever builder you use. The same build can be repeated after each chat change.

How many screens can a generated app have?

The plan holds up to 14 screens, with 3 to 5 of them as tabs and an Account tab last. More screens can be added later through chat, each change built before it is kept, so the first generation is a starting point rather than a ceiling.

Can more than one person edit the app?

A OneCraft site belongs to one owner account and is edited through that account's chat. Thunkable lets paid subscribers share private projects with other paid subscribers, which suits small teams who design together on the canvas. OneCraft has no shared editing, so one person usually owns the chat and the changes.
