Reddit banner size: community and profile banners
A Reddit community banner is commonly made at 1920 by 384 pixels, a 5:1 strip, as Snappa and Keywords Everywhere advise. Moda reports Reddit's community guide recommends at least 1600 by 480, with minimums of 1072 by 128 on desktop and 1080 by 128 on mobile. Keep banners as PNG or JPG under about 500 KB.
Reddit's banner rules live in moderator help pages that change with each redesign, and the guides quoting them disagree. A wide 5:1 or 10:3 banner with everything important in the middle survives all of them.

Why the numbers disagree
Reddit has redesigned its desktop and app layouts several times, and each change moved the banner's crop. The guides therefore quote different eras: Snappa recommends 1920 by 384 at 5:1, Keywords Everywhere uses that for desktop and 1600 by 480 for mobile and profile banners, and Moda reports Reddit's own community guide asking for at least 1600 by 480 with very shallow minimums. Moderators see a preview in the community settings, which is the final check.
Design for the middle
Because desktop shows a wide, shallow strip and phones show a taller crop from the centre, the part of a banner that every view shares is the middle. Put the community name or mark there and let the sides be pattern or photo. A 1920 by 384 file with a centred 1200 by 300 area for anything readable covers both crops; the 10:3 mobile crop then keeps the centre and loses the far left and right.
Icon and banner together
The community icon, around 500 pixels square and shown as a circle, sits beside the community name below or over the banner depending on the view. Banner and icon should share colours so the community reads as one identity, and the icon should not repeat the banner's text, since both appear on screen at once. Keep both files small: Snappa and Keywords Everywhere advise staying under about 500 KB.
Common mistakes
Placing the community name at the left edge, where the mobile crop cuts it. Uploading a busy photo that turns to noise in a thin strip. Exporting a large PNG well over the size guides' 500 KB advice. Assuming the old 1920 by 384 rule still matches every view without previewing. And forgetting that a profile banner for a user account is a separate image with its own shape.
Making a Reddit banner
The flyer editor has no 1920 by 384 or 1600 by 480 canvas, so it does not make Reddit banners directly. Its X header canvas is a 3:1 strip at 1500 by 500, exported at 3000 by 1000, which the image resizer and aspect ratio calculator can refit to 5:1 by trimming the top and bottom, or to 10:3 by trimming a little less. The blank 1920 by 384 PNG on this page is a ready 5:1 canvas.
Questions people ask
Who can change a subreddit banner?
Moderators of the community change the banner and icon from the community settings or mod tools. Ordinary members cannot change it. Moderators can preview the banner there, which is the best way to check the crop on desktop and in the app before saving.
What size is a Reddit profile banner?
Keywords Everywhere lists 1600 by 480 for a user profile banner, and notes older guides used 1200 by 400, which is the same 3:1 shape scaled. Keep text in the middle, since the profile picture and name sit over part of it.
What size is a Reddit community icon?
Moda gives 500 by 500 pixels and Keywords Everywhere 512 by 512, both square and shown as a circle. The difference does not matter visually; centre the mark with a margin so the circle does not cut it, and check it at small size in the community list.
Can a Reddit banner be animated?
The guides checked describe still PNG or JPG banners and advise keeping them under about 500 KB. A still image is the safe choice. Motion and announcements belong in pinned posts, which members can open and comment on, and which can be updated without touching the banner.
Why does my Reddit banner look blurry?
The image may have been stretched to fill a wide desktop screen, or compressed by Reddit after upload. Start from at least 1920 pixels wide, use clean shapes rather than fine detail, and keep text large enough to survive the narrow mobile crop.
