Tax deductible donation receipt R-2026-04417

Donation receipt

A wildlife charity issues one receipt for a year of giving. The interesting part is the second table, where a raffle ticket and a gala seat are listed and then excluded, because something was received in return for them.

This receipt covers the gifts received between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026, including the monthly giving that started after the spring raffle. It replaces the acknowledgements emailed at the time.

The $210 above is genuinely appreciated and it funded the same work. It is simply not a gift for tax purposes, because something was received in return for it. Those payments are shown here so the total that hit your bank account can be reconciled against the total you claim, which will not match.

Letterhead
The legal entity, ABN, the deductible gift recipient endorsement and the giving inbox, on every page.
Headline figures
The deductible total, how many gifts it covers, the financial year and the date the receipt was issued.
Issued to and issued by
The supporter with their number and address, and the charity with its ABN, endorsement and registration.
Gifts received
Nine gifts with the date received, what it was, how it was paid, the amount and a running total, ending on the headline figure.
The gift statement
The wording that no goods, services or material benefit were provided in return, and the two dollar threshold.
Payments not included
The raffle and the gala with the reason each is excluded, totalled separately so the bank statement can be reconciled.
Why the totals will not match
A plain explanation that the excluded money funded the same work and is simply not a gift for tax purposes.
What this receipt is for
Four numbered notes on claiming, the rule that a deduction cannot create a loss, joint donors and corrections.
Your giving so far
Three financial years with what was given in each and the cumulative total since 2023.
What this year paid for
The deductible total converted into animals through the rescue cycle, and where the December appeal money went.
Administration and authority
The cost split from the audited accounts, the monthly giving arrangement, the authorising officer and a tax advice disclaimer.

What makes this document work

The exclusions are on the receipt

A raffle and a gala ticket are listed with the reason each is not a gift, then totalled separately at $210. Most receipts leave them off entirely, which is exactly when a donor claims them by accident.

The running total makes it self checking

Nine gifts, each with the cumulative figure beside it, ending on the same $570 as the headline. A donor reconciling a bank statement against the receipt never has to add anything up.

The no benefit statement is written out in full

The charity names itself, confirms the amounts were received as gifts, and states that nothing was provided in return. That sentence, plus the ABN and the endorsement, is what makes the page a valid gift receipt rather than a thank you letter.

Questions people ask

What has to be on a donation receipt?

The name of the fund, authority or institution the gift was made to, its ABN, the fact that the receipt is for a gift, the amount and the date. Without those a donor has a record of a payment rather than evidence of a deductible gift.

Are raffle tickets and gala dinners deductible?

No. A gift means nothing is received in return, so a ticket that carries a chance to win a prize or a dinner is not a gift. Both appear on this receipt in a separate table with the reason, and neither is in the deductible total.

Can one receipt cover a whole year of monthly giving?

Yes, and it is easier to keep than twelve emails. This one covers 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, lists each direct debit with a running total, and says plainly that it replaces the acknowledgements sent at the time.

How long should a donor keep it?

Five years from the date the return is lodged is the guidance on the receipt itself. That is why the document carries the supporter number, the issue date and a note on how a corrected receipt is issued and the earlier one voided.
