Fashion sale flyer
Marlow & Fern takes thirty per cent off its autumn and winter racks for a fortnight and then stops, so the flyers have fourteen days to say who the sale is for and what a reduced ticket actually means. The first is an editorial poster with the dates, the four categories that are reduced and the two that are not. The second is about the fitting room rather than the discount. The third prints the shop’s returns position beside the part of it that is law rather than policy.
The 3 designs
The same business laid out three ways, on three templates and three colour themes. Every price, name and time on these was written for this example, so you can judge the layouts on real content rather than placeholder text.

What makes these work
The poster names what is not in the sale
Wool and alpaca knitwear in sizes 6 to 20, linen and cotton shirting, autumn coats and jackets, then a fourth line saying basics and denim stay at full price. A shopper who reads that line before walking in does not arrive expecting money off jeans. The reduced list behind the QR code is rewritten each morning, because sizes go and the racks are not restocked.
The middle flyer sells the fitting room, not the discount
Three cards: two rooms open all fortnight with nobody hurried, a yellow tag on anything flawed that names the flaw, and free hems and sleeve shortening over one hundred and twenty dollars. The sentence holding it together is that reduced does not mean final, it only means the price changed. Most returns a boutique handles are a size problem that four minutes at a mirror would have solved.
The third flyer separates the shop’s policy from the law
Fourteen days for change of mind with the tag on is a courtesy the shop is choosing to offer. A major fault meaning the customer picks the refund or the swap is not a courtesy at all. Printing them in two registers, one as a promise and one as a statement of what applies to reduced stock anyway, is far more convincing than a returns paragraph that blurs the two together.
Questions people ask
Can a shop refuse a refund on sale items?
Not as a blanket rule. Store policies that say no refunds, or no refunds or exchanges on sale items, are unlawful, because the consumer guarantees are automatic and a reduced price does not switch them off. What a shop can decline is a change of mind return, since nobody is entitled to a remedy because they got what they asked for and then went cold on it, and a sign reading no refund if you change your mind is allowed. If a business advertises a change of mind policy it has to honour the policy it advertised, which is why the fourteen day window on the third flyer states its own conditions in full.
What counts as a major fault in a garment?
A major failure is one where the item is unsafe, is very different from the description it was sold under, or has one serious problem, or several smaller ones, that would have stopped a reasonable buyer had they known beforehand. Then the customer chooses between a refund and a replacement. A minor problem works the other way: the business has to fix it free of charge and may choose repair as the remedy. Consumer guarantees have no expiry date and keep applying after any warranty a business gave has run out, so a seam that opens on the second wear is still the shop’s problem in August.
If a flaw is written on the ticket, can it be claimed later?
No, and that is the entire point of writing it down. Whether goods are of acceptable quality is judged taking into account anything the seller drew to the buyer’s attention before the sale, so a pulled thread named on a yellow tag before payment is the reason the price is lower rather than a fault waiting to be argued about later. The naming has to be specific. A tag saying seconds does nothing useful, a tag saying pulled thread left cuff and soiled hem does the work, and everything the tag does not name still has to be right.
Do clothes have to carry a care label?
Yes. The care labelling mandatory standard covers clothing, household textiles, apparel, furnishings, upholstered furniture, bedding, mattresses and bed bases, and requires a permanent, legible, securely attached label carrying care instructions. Under the 2023 standard a supplier can give the instructions written in English, use the five internationally recognised care symbols, or use both. Second hand goods are exempt, and so are bags and cases of every kind, including handbags, purses, wallets and travel bags. It matters at a sale where alterations are involved, because a hem taken up in the workroom should come back with the original label still attached to the garment.

Back to school flyer
January is eleven working days long for a schoolwear shop and every one of them is spent measuring children. Wattlebank Schoolwear in Prospect advertises that fortnight three ways: a photo led sheet that tells families to book a fitting time and what happens at each year level, a checklist of the three things to bring so the visit takes twenty minutes, and a plain page that sets out the lay-by and exchange terms before anyone pays a deposit.
Garage sale flyer
Six households on one Bendigo street open their driveways on the same Saturday morning, which is the only reason a driver turns off the main road at all. The three flyers here do the three jobs that morning needs. A poster says how many sales there are and what is in them. A rules sheet sets out what six neighbours agreed on so every driveway runs the same way. A house by house list names who is selling what, and says plainly what a private sale is and is not.
Clearance sale flyer
A clearance is not a sale with a bigger number on it. Sprocket & Pine has 31 bikes left from the 2025 range, most of them one or two per size, and nothing is being reordered. These three flyers all say that, but each one answers a different question: what is left, what each model now costs, and which bikes suit which rider.
