Garage sale flyer
Six households on one Bendigo street open their driveways on the same Saturday morning, which is the only reason a driver turns off the main road at all. The three flyers here do the three jobs that morning needs. A poster says how many sales there are and what is in them. A rules sheet sets out what six neighbours agreed on so every driveway runs the same way. A house by house list names who is selling what, and says plainly what a private sale is and is not.
The 3 designs
The same business laid out three ways, on three templates and three colour themes. Every price, name and time on these was written for this example, so you can judge the layouts on real content rather than placeholder text.

What makes these work
The poster counts the driveways before it lists the goods
One street, six sales, eight until one. A single garage sale is worth a detour from two streets away and six of them is worth a drive across town, so the number goes in the headline and the categories follow it. Furniture, garden tools, kitchen gear, bikes, records and about four hundred books, then the payment line and the postcode. Nothing else fits on a page read from a moving car.
The rules sheet is an agreement, not an advertisement
Six cards, one each for the start time, payment, testing, holds, packaging and the one o’clock finish. Every one of them is a question the neighbours got tired of answering: whether an early knock works, whether cards are taken, whether a sticker will hold a dresser while a ute is fetched. Printing the answers once means six driveways give the same answer all morning.
The list flyer names the houses and the limits
Number 4 is a shed, number 9 is a nursery, number 27 is the furniture. A buyer with a station wagon and an hour can plan the order they walk in. Underneath that, five short lines say the sale is private, that most of the protections a shop owes do not travel with the goods, and that clear title does. Very few sale flyers bother to say what the buyer is not getting.
Questions people ask
Do consumer guarantees apply at a garage sale?
Most of them do not. Consumer guarantees cover sales by a business, and the ACCC is explicit that most of them do not apply to one off sales between two people where the seller is not running a business, which is exactly what a garage sale is. Three survive, and all three are about ownership rather than condition: clear title to the goods, undisturbed possession, and no hidden debts or charges over them. That is why the list flyer prints those three as a promise and never promises that a kettle works. A buyer who plugs the kettle in on the driveway has done the only inspection they are going to get.
How many garage sales before it counts as a business?
There is no fixed number. The test business.gov.au sets out looks at whether you intend to make a profit or genuinely believe you will, whether you repeat similar activities, whether the size and scale match the way that trade normally operates, and whether the thing is run in a business like way with records, a business name or an ABN. Clearing a shed once a year is a hobby. Buying stock at auction, reselling it every second weekend and keeping books is a business, and then the income is declared to the ATO and the full set of consumer guarantees applies to what is sold. Six neighbours emptying their own houses on one Saturday sit a long way from that line.
Is it safe to sell second hand baby gear at a garage sale?
Check it before it goes on the table. The ACCC advice on second hand goods is to check whether a product has been recalled or banned or fails a mandatory standard, and it singles out nursery products and child car seats as items worth having inspected by an independent expert before they change hands. Businesses have to comply with mandatory safety standards even when the goods are used. A private seller who has not checked is handing a stranger a problem for twenty dollars, so the cot at number 9 is the item on this street that deserves a recall search, not the record crates.
What should a garage sale flyer say about payment and holds?
Both, in a line each, because they are the two arguments that happen on the footpath. These flyers say cash is easiest, that four of the six driveways take a bank transfer and none take cards, and that nothing is held without payment. A private seller has no obligation to keep an item for someone who has gone home for a trailer, and printing that is kinder than saying it at the table. The other line worth printing is what happens at the end. A one o’clock finish and a charity bin on Bridge Street tell a buyer that the last hour is the cheap one, which is what fills a driveway at noon.

Market stall flyer
Three flyers for Tuckshop Row, stall 14 at a Saturday market, open 7am to 1pm. The produce list is pegged to the stall front and prices four lines, heirloom tomatoes at $8 a kilo, asparagus at $6, strawberries at $7 and sourdough at $9, under the line Picked Friday, Sold Saturday. The box sheet takes pre-orders through the week, with four boxes from $28 to $54 and a Thursday cut-off. The weekend special moves whatever came in heavy that Friday, this time tomato seconds at $5 a kilo instead of $8.
Winter sale flyer
Kestrel Ridge Outfitters sells insulation to a town that sits at 435 metres, and its stocktake runs four days over the Kings Birthday long weekend. One flyer splits the shop into four categories with a discount against each. One works as a checklist of what a June kit actually contains. The third exists because the holiday falls on a different date in almost every state and the shop would rather print the Victorian one than assume.
Bookshop event flyer
Marram Books puts sixty chairs in the room above the shop and sells a fifteen dollar ticket that comes off the price of the book on the night. Three flyers do the work. An announcement carries the price, the signing and the stairs. A window poster carries three sentences of the novel itself and almost nothing else. A ticketing sheet sets out the run of the evening, the venue block and a QR code that goes to the booking page.
