Pop up shop flyer
Saltmarsh Ceramics has a Bannister Street shopfront for eleven days and one chance to fill it. The three flyers here answer the three questions a passer by has, in the order they ask them: when is it on, what is it, and can I get there on a Sunday. The last of those is not a throwaway, because a pop up in the Perth metropolitan area sits under the same retail trading hours as any other shop.
The 3 designs
The same business laid out three ways, on three templates and three colour themes. Every price, name and time on these was written for this example, so you can judge the layouts on real content rather than placeholder text.

What makes these work
The announcement leads with the number of days
Eleven days, then a date in figures and a street. A pop up has no brand recognition to trade on and no second chance, so the design that works is the one that reads like a notice rather than an advertisement, with the deadline doing the persuading.
The poster is one photograph of the making, not the shop
Rows of unglazed mugs drying on boards. A temporary shop is easy to mistake for a market stall, and a picture of the studio behind it is the fastest way to say the work is made rather than bought in for the fortnight.
The hours sheet publishes both sets of hours
The trading hours the law allows in metropolitan Perth, and the narrower hours one person can actually staff. Printing both stops a visitor arriving at 8am on the strength of a general rule and finding a locked door, which is the failure mode of every pop up that copies a chain store’s sign.
Questions people ask
What hours can a pop up shop trade in Perth?
A general retail shop in the Perth metropolitan area may trade from 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm on Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday. It must close all day on Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Good Friday, and other metropolitan public holidays run 8am to 6pm. Regional Western Australia has a different set again and general shops there close on Sundays.
Is a small pop up exempt from those hours?
It can be. A small retail shop under the Western Australian rules may trade at any hour on any day, but it has to qualify: owned by no more than six eligible people who are personally and actively engaged in it, no more than twenty five people working at any one time, and a valid certificate. An eligible person is someone who owns or operates no more than four retail shops.
How should seconds be priced and labelled?
Plainly, and with the fault named. These flyers use a green dot on the base, the flaw written on the ticket, and a price from a third off. Describing a second accurately is what makes it a second rather than a faulty item, because the consumer guarantee about acceptable quality takes into account anything the seller drew to the buyer’s attention before the sale.
Does a pop up have to give receipts?
Yes, on the same terms as a permanent shop. At $75 or more excluding GST a proof of transaction has to be given as soon as practicable, and below that it has to be provided within seven days of a request. It has to show the supplier and its ABN, the date, the goods and the price, which matters more than usual when the shop will not exist in a fortnight.

Boxing Day sale flyer
Three Boxing Day flyers for an Adelaide tailor, and all three lead with the reduction rather than the trading hours. The poster puts forty per cent off suiting at the top, the grid prices all four floors, and the third sheet shows the three house suits with the old price beside the new one. The hours are still there, in the corner where they belong.
Furniture sale flyer
Halyard & Oak sells what is standing in its Geelong showroom and reorders none of it, so a four week floor stock sale has both a fixed end and a fixed count. The cover flyer pairs the showroom with the workshop and says that in one sentence. The sheet in the middle prints was, now and how many are left against three pieces. The third lifts six lines straight off the delivery docket, including the wall strap and the rule about measuring the hall.
Christmas sale flyer
A toy shop at Christmas is not really selling a discount. It is answering two questions at the counter forty times a day: what suits a four year old, and what can I get for fifty dollars. Pennywhistle Toys answers the first on one flyer and the second on another, then puts the lay-by dates and the age warnings on a third so nobody has to ask.
