Grand opening flyer

One new hardware shop, Rowan & Sons on Mercer Street, and three flyers for three jobs. The date poster goes in the window weeks out and gives the opening date and the 8am start, with free coffee, ten percent off all weekend and a bench where the staff sharpen your tools. The offer sheet sits by the till and prices one product, the 5 litre cast iron pot at $119 against its $149 RRP, for the opening weekend only. The photo invitation goes to the mailing list and the neighbours, with coffee from eight and the ribbon at nine.

The 3 designs

The same business laid out three ways, on three templates and three colour themes. Every price, name and time on these was written for this example, so you can judge the layouts on real content rather than placeholder text.

What makes these work

The date is the headline

A grand opening flyer has one job, which is to put a date in someone's head. On the date poster, the opening date and the 8am start form the biggest line after the words Grand Opening, and the invitation repeats the date in short form before the body copy starts. Everything else, including the story of the first Rowan shop forty years ago, is set at a size that supports the date.

A reason to actually turn up

Free coffee and a sharpening bench give people something to do on the day, which is what turns a date into a visit. The offer sheet adds one product at a set price, $119 with a -20% chip, and says Saturday and Sunday so the deal has an end. The comparison is the $149 recommended retail price rather than a usual price, because a store that has not opened yet has never charged one. $30 off $149 is the 20% on the chip, and the 25 year warranty sits on top of the guarantees every buyer already has under consumer law.

Warm colour, not loud colour

The terracotta palette reads as celebration without shouting, so the shop still looks like somewhere you would buy a good chisel. The date poster uses it as one solid block, the offer sheet keeps it to the -20% chip and the price, and the invitation lets a photograph carry the page.

Questions people ask

When should a grand opening flyer go out?

Two to three weeks out for the poster and the mailed invitation, and on the day itself for anything carrying an offer. People forget a date they hear more than a month early. Here the date poster goes in the window first, the photo invitation goes to the mailing list and the neighbours, and the offer sheet only appears at the till on the weekend.

Should I put an offer on it?

Yes, and tie it to the opening weekend, because an offer with no end gives nobody a reason to come on the day. The date poster here promises ten percent off everything all weekend, and the offer sheet adds one product at a set price for Saturday and Sunday only. Printing both days on the sheet is what tells a reader the deal closes.

Can I print this at home?

Yes. Export as PDF and each A4 page is captured at 2480 by 3508 pixels, which is 300 DPI. There is no bleed in the export, so a home printer leaves its usual white margin and the text should stay clear of the edges. For a shop window, take the same PDF to a print shop and ask for A3.

How do I turn this into a square or story post?

Set the canvas size on the page to Instagram Post or Instagram Story. Both are native sizes for all three designs, so the square or tall version is swapped in rather than the A4 being rescaled, and your offer, dates and address carry over by slot. Note the address is typed text on these designs, not a pin: the map slot draws world countries, so there is no street map to drop a marker on.

How far in advance should the flyer be printed?

Far enough to letterbox two weekends before the opening, which usually means artwork finished three weeks out. The offer design is the one to drop, the poster design goes in the window as soon as the fit out allows, and the invite design goes to the people you want at the opening itself.

Which size suits a local Facebook group post?

Facebook Post at 1200 by 630, native for all three designs. Add a page at that size and the wide version comes in with the date and the offer carried across. Local groups compress images heavily, so keep the headline large and export as PNG rather than JPG for cleaner type.
