Bramwell Rail Services Capability Statement

Capability deck

Eleven slides from Bramwell Rail Services, an invented track renewal contractor, sent to get onto an approved supplier list rather than to win a named job. A capability statement is normally a one page leave behind, and this is its expanded form: sections that map to what a category manager screens on, in the same order. There is no offer in it, no price, and one slide that admits the firm sits below the framework minimum on digital maturity.

Who We Are

A track renewal and maintenance contractor based in Doncaster, working the East Coast and Trans Pennine routes since 1997. Four hundred and eighty people, six depots, and no part of the work subcontracted except vegetation clearance.

WHAT WE HOLD OURSELVES TO

Hand back early

A possession handed back late is a failure even when the work is done. We plan to the handback, not to the task list.

Own the risk

Our own staff, our own plant, our own protection. The only thing we subcontract is vegetation.

Evidence it

Every possession closes with a signed record of what was done, measured, and left behind on site.

02

Slide 2 · intro · One paragraph on who the firm is, with the three commitments the rest of the deck has to evidence.

Seven Disciplines, One Workforce

Every one of these is delivered by directly employed Bramwell staff and Bramwell plant.

01
Plain line

Rail and sleeper renewal on plain line, up to 400 metres of track in a single overnight possession.

02
S&C renewal

Switch and crossing replacement, including modular panel delivery, welding and tamping to design.

03
Ballast

Undercutting, ballast cleaning and shoulder replacement, using the three cutting trains we own.

04
Survey

Track geometry survey and renewal design, done by our own nine designers rather than a consultancy.

05
Maintenance

Routine inspection, fastening replacement and reactive attendance, under a five year term contract.

06
Drainage

Cess and catchpit renewal, culvert clearance, and the CCTV survey that decides which one is needed.

07
Protection

Our own controllers of site safety and our own lookouts, so protection is never a hired dependency.

03

The Only Number That Counts

Possessions worked in the year to March 2026, and the ones we did not hand back on time.

412

Possessions worked

Across six routes in the year to March 2026. Ninety one of them were on switch and crossing renewals.

3

Handed back late

Two for a failed tamper, one for a cable strike we caused. All three are written up in the appendix.

04

Framework minimum

WHERE WE WIN AND WHERE WE DO NOT

SAFETY

Twenty two points clear of the minimum. Zero RIDDOR events across 41,000 shifts since 2022.

DELIVERY

Eighteen points clear. 409 of 412 possessions handed back on or before time last year.

PLANT

Owning three ballast cleaning trains is why this sits at 84 rather than in the sixties.

DESIGN

Eleven points clear, no more. Our design team is nine people and that is the ceiling.

DRAINAGE

Sixteen points clear. Growing, but we still hire in CCTV survey rather than own it.

DIGITAL

Two points below the minimum. Our asset data is not yet in the common data environment.

07

Comparable Contracts

Seven contracts of similar scale and type in the last five years, with the referee named in the appendix.

Trans Pennine east term maintenance, 214 track miles, £14.2m a year, renewed to 2029.

Goole S&C, four units across two Christmas blockades, handed back six hours early.

Selby undercutting, 4.4km, delivered inside a fixed price with no compensation event.

Thorne culverts, nine structures cleared and lined, finished 4 percent under target cost.

Hull geometry survey and renewal design, 31 track miles, adopted without amendment.

Route 4 reactive maintenance, three years, median attendance on site 3 hours 10 minutes.

Knottingley renewal, 2.2km plain line, defect free at the twelve week geometry check.

From Award To First Possession

STAGE 01

Set Up

Two weeks. Depot allocated, Sentinel sponsorship transferred, protection arrangements agreed with the route.

STAGE 02

Survey

Three weeks. Our own geometry trolleys and designers. No survey is taken on trust from an incumbent.

STAGE 03

Plan

Four weeks. Possession bids submitted, plant booked, and a handback time agreed for every one of them.

STAGE 04

Work

First possession in week ten. It is deliberately a small one, so the first thing we prove is the handback.

CAPABILITY STATEMENT 2026

BRAMWELL RAIL SERVICES

Assess us.

We are not asking for work in this document. We are asking to be assessed, and we would rather that assessment happened on a Tuesday than in the middle of a bid.

What makes this deck work

It shows the weakness on the chart

The radar puts the firm two points below the framework minimum on digital maturity, and the sidebar says so in words. A supplier list assessment tests whether you know your own gaps, and volunteering one makes the other five scores readable.

Current workload answers capacity

Sixteen live commitments arranged by stage, ending with capacity for one further term contract from January. Buyers screening a supplier list want to know whether the firm can take the work before they care what it does.

Owning the plant is the capability

Forty one items listed by category, including the one line that says drainage CCTV is hired in. In this trade the machine is the differentiator, so a list of owned assets carries more weight than a page of adjectives.

Questions people ask

What must a capability statement include?

Core competencies in the buyer own vocabulary, the registration codes and identifiers they screen on, accreditations and insurance, past performance with contactable referees, delivery footprint and capacity, and a named contact. Government buyers in several countries require one before they will hold a meeting.

What is the difference between a capability deck and a capability statement?

The statement is conventionally one page, designed to be left behind or emailed. The deck is its expanded form and follows the same section order rather than a narrative arc, which is why this example reads as a reference document instead of a story.

Should a capability deck include prices?

No. It is sent before a specific requirement exists, so a price would be invented. This example carries no rate card and no offer, and its closing slide asks to be assessed rather than to be given work.

How do I get on a company approved supplier list?

Most large buyers run a prequalification questionnaire. In UK construction the industry agreed set is the Common Assessment Standard, mandated by procurement policy note and delivered at two certification levels by a handful of recognised assessment bodies. Send the capability document, then ask which questionnaire applies.
